i have my dad's old hunting rifle. He bubba'd the rifle already and it doesnt look that great :( so I figured for a winter project I would redo this rifle as a nice bush gun.

One question about these rifles.. the barrel is long. Can I chop it down to 20" or 18" to make it more manageable in the bush? will the bullet velocity/power be effected much?

Unless there is a prob with the muzzle , I wouldn't cut it .
The barrel isn't that long to hamper hunting and someday you might want to restore it .

Another issue is dealing with crowning it after. If you just cut it with a hacksaw you'll have to deal with it possibly shooting screwy either strait off the bat or if you nick the mouth of the uncrowned muzzle - is 4 inches going to make that big a difference?

You should only ever cut the barrel if you have a new one to replace it with.

same with wood......and sights.......and bolt handles, and....well you get the idea

all the upper wood is gone. the lower stock around the action is cracked and chipped and been cut off just past the sling swivel. whomever cut the wood also managed to mark up the barrel with the saw. It has some ugly scope base from the 60's on it. the rear sight is gone.. well the part attached to the barrel is there, but the rest is gone. Thats about it i guess.

It was in a packing box from 1963 to 2006, lots of rust that I removed with 000 steel wool and gun oil. Some pitting, but not major.

works good still, just fugly. I just figured for the price of these rifles it wouldnt be a big deal.

The bolt is also a replacement. action and barrel match though.

Perfect for dense forest and pesky droids;) I'm just messin with ya, if it's really that butchered I'd say do as you please. That said - like before, if it's that butchered, why waste the gunsmith costs to shorten it a few inches?

i dont have a shop.. all my tools are in boxes at the moment (renting until dec.) and I dont have a decent cut off saw..
and I have no crowning tool.

The woodworking and metal working I am planning.. I can do.. but I dont want to goon up the barrel just because I didnt have the right setup.

20 years ago I cut down the barrel on a Swedish Mauser using a hacksaw. I made a wooden jig so that I could rotate the barrel against the step in the barrel and turn it against a grinder. I smoothed out the crown this way where it meets the rifle lands, then finished the curvature where the bullet doesn't touch by hand as I turned it against the grindstone. The gun shoots sub moa and will hit a bowling pin at 300 yards consistently, even after shooting 20 or 30 shots in rapid succession.

I did this after taking it to a young gunsmith who used some sort of barrel arbour system and produced a crown that produced flyers after the 2nd shot.

I'm not saying everyone should try this, but if you are good at sharpening drill bits by hand, you will understand how this can be done.

Ew. WTF is that!? haha

Mine is going to be classy. I have some sketches. Going to add some brass, change the stock color, do it up nice. I want to make this ugly mofo something to look at, but unique from other enfields.

I will see about the barrel. I will leave it for now, but it will look way more balanced if its shorter. And work better for carrying in the bush.

Haha a SOPMOD Mosin-Nagant, if you can't take them out with 5.56mm then blow them away with this or or at least "flashbang" them with the muzzle flash & blast effect if you miss them. :owned:

Wild foot ......you do realize what your talking about is almost blasphemy ?

buy a bubba but don't cut a barrel if you don't need to
its your do what you will but its jus my two cents
