Has Hornady discontinued carcano specific bullets? If so, does anyone provide a hunting legal expanding .268 jacketed bullet? I know about the PPU fmj's but the game-warden might take issue with those.

There has been a lot of discussion about openng the tip of a fmj bullet which has a jacket open at the base. Might be legal from the standpoint of hunting regulations, but there could be other problems.

We need someone to try loading FMJ backwards, like they did in WW1 to see what the range limitations may be.
Might make a hell of a short range hunting round.
And yes, I think outside the box.

Also consider buying 264 bullets of your choosing, powdercoat them twice and then size to 268.

I do this for loading 401 WSL (.4065) with .40 cal pistol bullets. One layer of PC is about 3 thou.

I was looking at Corbin's swaging dies, but that's quite an investment. Online I've read about people using a neck sizing die to form down .277(270). Wartime production Caranon's, which is most of them, were drilled, rough reamed and rifled; no lapping. When you bore scope them, of all the 30 different ones I own, you can really see the tool marks, even on postwar F.A.T. refurbs. I'm also experimenting with copper plating after a friend of mine who was a former electrical engineer, told me that the bullets (anything being plated) don't have to directly touch anode they just need to be in the path of the anode and cathode. I was dissuaded when I went online and seen people making a bullet tree to the anode and I thought, what a pain in the arse, their setups are needlessly over complicated. I put a glass dish on top of a waterbed heater, used straight vinegar, and only had to put the bullets in the path of the current to plate, which they did plate. Or... I have a lathe and I can turn some from round brass-stock. There's more then one way to skin a catfish.... who thought it was ment as an actual cat all their lives.. ;-)

I believe the PRIVI bullets offered by Tradex, have solid, enclosed bases

Powder coating a spitzer .264 won’t give best results. Really need the long round nose bullets in a Carcano.

Jet Bullets sells .268 cast bullets. They worked amazing for me.

I’ve never seen anything other than .264s from Privi here. They .268s seem to be for the European market where they know the proper size bullet.

I have loaded hundreds of rounds of 30-30 and 308 with a 147 gr FMJ backwards. They make great 30-30 plinkers for 50 yards or less. Accuracy is not stellar, but for some plinking purposes, they work just fine.

I have no idea if there would be any expansion.

I have experimented with clipping off the nose of a FMJ. I clipped it off with a side cutter then cleaned it up with a file. It expanded.

But, there is a danger of the core blowing through the jacket and then obstructing the bore. If you try this, check the bore after firing one shot.
