My shooting chrony has progressed to a state of non-functioning with reading. It declined over a period of time.

I know they aren't worth much but is there anybody is doing to service/clean/maintain these units?

It no longer will pick up the projectile crossing the first beam regardless of conditions, sunshade set up, etc...........

Are the photo sensors a no touch item or do they build with crud over time?

Anything else that could be suspect?

I use keyboard duster to clean the sensors. Whatever you do just be careful and don't use any strong solvents. The units can be sent in for a refurb. If that's worth it or not is up to you.

They seem to be OUT OF BUSINESS. I'm sure I could find the sensors but the control board was proprietary

That's too bad. They offered an affordable product that can benefit so many many . The old one I have prefers fresh a fresh battery too. Never a bit of trouble. Small hole in the screen from muzzle blast blowing a horsefly through it.

I have faith that most simple electronics can be brought back to life with careful cleaning and inspection with a multi meter. If you find something that you can't clean or plug back in, a battery place or an electronics repair shop can usually fix it for very little expense.

I haven't fixed one, but I would not be scared to jump in. Completely dismantle and gently clean with 99% isopropyl alcohol on a que tip gently. Look for corrosion on solder points.

If it is unfixable, all you did was spend a few hours taking it apart and poking around.

Instead of 9 volt try 12 volt,I bought a battery pack that can be filled with AA batteries, works really good in cold temperatures when one 9 volt is just marginal.

Other issues I have found with older electronics is that some of the electrolytic capacitors go bad and also a lot of the solder joints seem to deteriorate,in the years I owned an auto repair business I have restored a lot of cruise control modules from VW and Audi by simply re-soldering every solder joint in the circuit and like magic they all came back to life.
So maybe that is the issue with your Chrony.

Very possible and a life of being 10ft away from repeated muzzle blasts can't be very healthy either I'd imagine.

Only thing here is the cost of the unit isn't very much so if a guy wrecks it , no biggie or spend days fixing it?

I wasted a bunch of money trying to fix/maintain a ced chrony. Never was able to fix it. Should have bought a new one sooner.

I ave a bunch of Chronys. It is all I have used for the last 30 years.

Since I test in my back yard, I can choose when to test. I test on an overcast day.

I shoot rifle 20 feet from the unit. Pistol at 15 feet. No muzzle blast interference.

I tuck an extra battery in the floor of the unit, with a piece of tape, so a spare is always there when needed.

Use Q tip to wipe crud off the skyscreens.

I created a new sunscreen but I am at odds of figuring out if that has any effect on things.I was tired of the original ones , I would up taping the screens to the poles and to the unit so it wouldn't twang apart and send rods flying.

Here is what I have now, but I did this a problems were already arising.

My shooting set up

Now, I don't recall any more, but don't the 'shade' screens need to be translucent so that they let some light through? If the bullet is flying through that setup, it would look more like a dark tunnel to the sensors and they would only be getting light from the sides to illuminate the projectile. If they don't get enough light or it isn't getting to the sensor properly, it could miss 'seeing' it?
