Pistol-Gripped Shorty Shotgun League

I enjoyed the video, it was relaxing and well presented. I was surprised at how easy it was to shoot my birdshead shotgun, and what a handy and portable firearm it is. Keep up the good work Brobee!

Love shooting skeet with my regulator but the rear swell in the birds head combined with the smooth finish makes it very slippery in this 34 degree heat here. I also shoot low gun but normally break 22 or above except last week. I had a broken molar root playing havoc on my nerve so i couldnt let my teeth touch. I managed a lousy 16

Good shooting though. Love proving those snobs wrong lol

Hi Folks!

I just uploaded a video on my latest adventure with a pistol-grip-only shotgun:

What I would not give to experience a full squad of PGO wielding skeet fiends...:) Hope you are all safe, healthy, and happy!

Best,

Brobee

That was AWESOME

Thank you for sharing!

I made one of these with 14” hatsan escort and a bird head grip from something else that fit closely. I put a little grip tape in places and it’s very controllable, even with heavy 3” loads. It’s exciting and a bit punishing, but you aren’t going to lose it. It’s been through enough now that I trust it and it goes with me all over the place when something might be handy to have.

Last Friday my wife and I took a chance and bought a "small" 12ga shotgun. In short, even though I have not yet fired it, I'm in at least fake-love with the little devil. As soon as my wife first saw and held it (the shotgun!), she said "now I understand why you wanted one of these; when do I get to shoot it?" Obviously, this is the one and only response that ensures domestic tranquility. For me, without the wife, there is no life (worth living, anyway). You know, "heII hath no fury like a woman scorned" .... etc.

After carefully considering all of the low-recoil ammo recommendations and calling various retailers, this morning I bought three boxes (75 rounds, total) of the Kent Low Recoil Training ammo at a place just a few kms from our home. I was happy (but my happiness did not last for long).

Just a few minutes ago I visited the web site of a locally-well-known indoor handgun AND long-gun range to find out the latest range-price details, as well as any COVID-related restrictions. Luckily, I also read the FAQs for the range because just imagine my surprise when I read that the range only allows 12ga slugs to be fired. To verify that what was written was not some kind of grammatical mistake, I called the range and got confirmation that indeed slugs were the only ammo allowed. I asked why and was told that "bird shot causes more damage to the range than slugs". This is the exact opposite of what I (and all the local deer) had thought, but that is that range's policy, period, and there's nothing that I can do about it. So either I find a different place to shoot the Kent or I buy some low-recoil slugs that will not completely turn my wife off to shooting our new firearm ever again (and probably put me in the dog house for a few days).

So, what is the lowest-recoil, probably-lightest-slug, ammo on the market and how do you think its recoil will compare to that of the Kent and other low-recoil, bird-shot ammo?

Thanks.

Brobee, thanks for making this video, I quite enjoyed it. What ammunition were you using?

I can see a point. Slug shooters usually shoot for groups. Any idiot can buy cheap bird shot shells and blast away at anything cheaply and wildly. I see it at my range. But then again theres some #######s that love shooting baffles

Some may argue against this but ive done it well over 7500 times. Buy a lee load all 2 kit and a lee lead melting pot and a lee 7/8oz drive key mold. Set the press up for your favorite light skeet load of 7/8 oz and instead of dropping the shot in load the molded slug. 7/8oz slug at 1150fps is soft shooting and cheap. Hulls can be had for free at most ranges and lead can be scrounged cheaply and melted.
Put some hs6 behind that molded slug and enjoy the kick and flame balls to.
Or buy a lee hand kit and a roll crimper and have some fun.

In my experience, any of the low recoil slug options kick considerably more than the 2.5 inch 1200fps 3/4oz kents.

Thanks for your kind comment, am glad you enjoyed it! Re ammo: I’m shooting Kent’s 2.5 inch 3/4oz 1200fps low recoil training rounds. I like them enough that I use them for all my clay shooting (even competitive), with the exception of birds that are more than 45 yards away.

Thanks, Brobee. I'm going to have to find a place that allows shooting the Kents.

(brybenn, I'm not going to get into loading my own ammo ............ not yet, anyway.)

I know that the Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association has a shotgun range, but because we were formerly members only in order to shoot our now-useless 7.62x39 rifle, I don't really know much about the shotgun range beyond the facts that that range is the only one where bird shot can be fired, and that one can shoot clays that are thrown by machines designed for that purpose. I do not know if one can shoot at fixed targets, horizontally, as one would shoot at them at the various rifle ranges and the pistol range. I will discuss the shooting options on the shotgun range with the people at SPFGA. If horizontal shooting is not allowed on the shotgun range, I'm afraid I might be up (what's that show's name?) "Schitt's Creek", without a paddle.

Thanks! Have you tried your ‘yote and buck yet?

Have not had a chance yet, we have our hands full with... A new pup! Egon vom Noble Spirit (blue collar) with his brother (black collar).

Brobee, i just watched your latest video. What can I say? Great opening commentary and explanation. Great graphics. Great shooting. This could be broadcast on any Canadian or American specialty outdoor sports show -- sponsored by Remington, of course (unless Remington goes under for some reason; in which case you might want to switch to a Mossberg shorty, and then be sponsored by Mossberg ........... and buy and Opsol clip, shortys, etc.).

Anyway, great video. Congrats.

Hi GN members, can anyone tell me the legality for shortening a semiauto 12 ga shotgun to 20" bbl length .Conventional butt stock damaged bbl but could make 20".
Thanks in advance

Hi Folks!

Back several months ago there was a thread wondering when/if the Mossberg Shockwave would be available in Canada. I talked a bit in that thread about my 590A1 Shockwave build and proposed that perhaps we organize a pistol gripped shorty shotgun league. I've been thinking about it ever since but with work and family, time just seems to be slipping by. So I figured rather than some sort of "official" league, why not a thread that shares some of what goes on whenever we're lucky enough to get out and play with these toys?

So here's my first entry!

Each year for the past several years I've done a shotgun deer hunting YouTube video project. I've been musing a bit about doing my next one with my Mossberg Shockwave, and have started devoting some of my recreation time to figuring out what it's limitations are and more importantly, what are my limitations when using it? I brought it out this weekend and did some patterning and general familiarization exercises, and I brought the camera along so I could film some preparatory material for my hunting video.

Here's some quick fragments from my range session:

I started out by patterning some Remington Managed-Recoil 00 buckshot. It's got 8 pellets, and I can actually shoot it through the shockwave quite comfortably! My targets were set up in 7 yard increments out to 28 yards. At 7, 14, and 21 yards I think the Shockwave and I would be pretty lethal, but at 28 yards I'm challenged both with my accuracy as well as the pattern is approaching the limits for an ethical kill. The short sight radius of the gun makes careful aim difficult, and you can see by my targets that elevation error is a big issue and that at 28 yards I had some lateral issues too. More practice required for me!!

I then set up my skeet field and went a couple rounds with the shockwave. Station 1, 2, 6, & 7...no problem! Station 3,4 & 5? Haha! Let's just say I have a lot of work to do there still. My big breakthrough was at Station 8. Whereas previously it was a lost cause, something clicked this time and I was much more successful. My high skeet score with the shockwave was a 19, low score was a 13 so I've still got a lot of work to do. Wish I had a delay mechanism for my wireless trap controller!

All in all, a fun range session and I can't wait to get out for my next one!

Hope you're all having a great summer, and hope to read about some of your pistol-gripped shorty shotgun adventures here.

Cheers,

Brobee

You don`t need no stinking gun stock ! Nice
