from Willie Dulie, man in the NZ tahr foundation fight / editor NZ Hunter mag
Kia Ora facebook friends and whanau across the world, I'm reaching out because I really need your help, like really. So please read on, even if I've fallen beyond your top 5 snapchat buddies of late...
Firstly, I don't care much for politics, I despise the time I spend on social media (admittedly a super powerful tool for connecting and sharing messages like this, and great for marketing the crust when the coin stack is getting low), and I'd much prefer just to spend all my time in the mountains, head in the sand with good friends and family, amazing wild animals and blissfully ignore all that is wrong in the world...
But now and again, an issue crops up that hits you hard - it makes you sad, angry, frustrated at the lies & mistruths told, and you start to become one of those anti-government conspiracy theorists...
The issue in hand that's got me all riled up like a bull with a nanny in estrus, is DOC's new Tahr Control Plan for 2020/21 which was finalised at 11.03PM on Tuesday and put into action the very next day (apparently meaningful stakeholder consultation is no longer a government requirement in NZ in 2020). Without going into all the details, it stands to decimate my business, my recreation, my mental health - and I'm just one of thousands who will be negatively impacted by it. Many will fare far worse than me.
I am fair, reasonable, prepared to compromise and I fully promote the need to manage our wild game animals in a balance with our native flora & fauna (I care about this far more than most), but this proposed cull is beyond any commonsense control - it goes as far as easily being considered, eradication in disguise.
Tahr are a majestic animal, one that thrives in the harshest mountain environments, they have now lived in NZ for 116 years (longer than any of us...), they're near threatened in their homeland, and they provide a source of income and recreation for thousands of kiwis. At the very least, Tahr deserve the respect to be managed accordingly to sound science and research.

If you want to learn more about what I'm rabbiting on about, here's some handy resources:
-An interview with Sarah Perriam https://youtu.be/I1P5JQ7iXII
-A chat with Matthew Gibson (now a Hawke's Bay boy so he's one of us... likely catch him at the Thirsty Whale on a Thursday night) Podcast - The Educated Hunter https://open.spotify.com/episode/5YXPudBEy534kppUy5SL3u
-Tahr 101 resource www.nztf.org.nz/tahr101
Many thanks for your precious time on this Thursday evening when all you likely want to do is put the feet up, crack open a pale ale and watch Hilary on the telly. Cheers!
PS - stole the pic from David (hopefully he doesn't mind...), one of the best images around I reckon that shows how incredible these critters are!
