What would you choose as a hunting caliber?

If you want to hunt past 300m then I would suggest one of two calibres:

6.5 Grendel (assuming we're talking AR-15 magazines)
.308 Winchester (assuming we're talking AR-10 magazines)

Why?

Because although other people will suggest various niche calibres, they are in my opinion a poor choice unless you are quite wealthy.

If you want to shoot past 300 you need to know what you're doing more so than if you're point and pulling from 0-200m. This means practice, that means burning through ammo and that can get very expensive very quickly.

So in my view the calibres you're most likely to get good with will be those that are in a wide enough variety to be commonly available and a good round for your rifle found whilst also being affordable enough to practice with. Hence .223 and 308 being excellent choices but for a little extra umph go for 6.5Grendel

This makes a lot of sense.

Let's say money isnt an issue and the shooter can afford to practice. Does it come down to bullet choices? I've been recommended Barnes for the 458 and I would assume Accubonds for the Grendel? Cast would even be an option with the 458..

Also, can you load to bolt action specs on a small frame sporter? I do with my Stag 308 but that's a different ball game.

Agreed with Bratwurst. It really doesn't matter what caliber you are using if 1. You cannot hit your target 2. You cannot find your ammunition 3. You cannot afford it.
I don't know what you are hunting, but .308 is a fantastic choice. It has longer effective range than .223, and is able to take down larger games.

Hope this helps.

Never had any issues finding rem 30 ar ammunition in Canada to purchase, similar cost as 308 and I would be comfortable on medium sized game to 400 yds
