I'm still thinkig about a .375/303 but I have this 277 barrel so.....

Anyone know if this has been done, the .277 barrel needs a home and the enfield that is crying out for some attention.

Barrel comes from a rem 700 so there will be a fair bit of work to rethread it to fit the enfield reciever, then chambering it.

I'm thinking some sort of 277 on a 303brit case perhaps with the sholders blown out a bit.

Over the years, there have been all sorts of 303 based wildcats.
I dont own any rifles, but I have read of the cartridges, as I collect cartridges.
I think that in Australia, and South Africa, there were a couple that where loaded commercially. 6mm/303 I believe.

:D

lots of factory loads down under for 303 based rounds. I know that they have everyting from .22 - .375 on the 303brass. I just havn't seen anything in .277. I'm farily sure that it's been done

I think Ellwood Epps played with the .270/.303 wildcat, as did Musgrave in South Africa....Australia saw many of these Wildcats based on the .303 in either Lee-Enfields or preferably Martinis. Not popular here because our cals. are largely based on US preferences and the .303 is a non-starter there.

If shooting a Lee, be careful about pressures. If shooting an P Enfield, barrel will not fit.

I did a Rem barrel on a Lee action and the install was not that difficult because most of the Rem shank is removed and the 303 is a much bigger (fatter) cartridge then the 270. Nice way to get barrels if working with Lee's is your thing.

The 303Brit has been wildcatted in all popular cals reg. and improved. The best you will likely approach is a watered down 270 or 270-308.

I am sure you know to use the No4 Lee. At least you have a chance at decent performance. I am hoping that you already own the reamer and can do the work yourself. Otherwise, not a particularly economical build.

But then, somethings just need to get built. Try Ellwood Epps

Australian 270/303 was regular .303" case necked down to .
270.
270/303 Epps was an "improved" .303" case necked to 270. Epps may still have the reamer.

303/270

I currently have a 303/270 and a 303/22, both on the full length case. The 303/270 is a nicely put together sporter by Sportco, fully up to the standard of the Parker Hale sporters, and based on a 1917 Enfield MkIII*. Loading data is not all that good for the 303/270, 35gr of AR2208 (Varget) behind the 130gr Hornady giving around 2500fps. Going to put it over the chronograph this week with my handloads and about 30 rounds of "Riverbrand" factory loaded. The most popular round of the Australian wildcats based on the .303 case was/is the 303/25.

My 303/22 at the moment, it has a 28" long large diameter ex - BSA .22LR barrel. I am working on the 45 gr .223 projectile to begin with (barrel and twist limitations) with 34.5gr of 2208 for my current batch and fireforming as I go. I intend to work it up until the barrel throat is gone then get a TrueFlite in .224 and expand onto other projectiles and powders. It is pressure limited as it is based on a No4 action and not a P-14. If you don't think .22/250 and you regard it as a Super-Hornet and .223 equivalent, its about right.

Case forming is the pits, I was too cheap to buy the Simplex forming dies, so I start by FL sizing in the .303BR die, annealing a case, chamfer the end of the neck and using a Redding bushing die, put it into the .310 bushing, then the .288, then into the 6.5 x 55 die to adjust the shoulder, then into the .267, then - finally - into the .247, then Neck Size in the 303/22 NS die, trim to length, do a finish anneal and its finished. It is OK doing them in batches of 25.

How does it shoot ?. Lots more tweaking to do, but the average for the last 5 groups is 5/8" for 5 shot groups at 100yds. The 10 shot group yesterday opened out to 1.5" wide x 5/8" high (me wobbling) and a 3 shot group immediately afterwards had all three touching. I have a lot more to do in bedding the rifle and trigger work.

Woodchopper, if you do it you will be better to just do the standard 270-303, not the Improved. The standard feeds slick as butter, the Imp you can only get two to feed from the mag.

I have had two Imps, and it just isn't worth the trouble, unless you are satisfied with two down. :)

sent a few e-mails back and forth with the gunsmith on this one.

It's a winter project for me to fit the barrel, and then send it for chambering. Gunsmith does not have the reamer so I'll have to pay 50% for that too. But it does give me the option to have whatever improved / epps / design I can think of.
