Ruger, for some unknown reason, chose to make the barrels .313-314 gr groove diameter. Nonetheless, my first choice for a bullet would be the .3115 Sierra 180. You can push these to 2600 easily in the Number One.
Rugers should have from five to seven pounds of upward pressure at the tip and the fore arm must fit the barrel OD.
Make certain the buttstock is not loose. I do find them to shoot best when held consistently. I got my first Number One in 1971 and I've never had any trouble getting them to shoot.
Is it shooting random patterns or is it walking it's shots higher as the barrel heats up?
is that a racism thing lol cos its Aussie? lolI have never fired a Woodleigh bullet through anything.
.
Were it me I'd try a 30 cal 180 gr Nosler Partition (having an open base) in front of 40 grains of IMR 3031, which is a 308 Win load but I would use it in the Ruger No 1 only.
So, shot the loads with modified rifle............ hornadys are out but its consistant........
Woodleighs, well i only tried the 2 groups for interest sake.... 2 shots of each charge... look at this....
the top two holes were 43gr varget......... closest ive seen in a while.. or the 42gr was same line but out horizontally (i may of opened that up a touch i felt one go left an possibly first go right slightly of the target)

Looks as though i could potentially look around 42-43-44 gr maybe even 42.5 - 43 - 43.5 with the remaining woodleighs!?
an will try these RN 180gr speers shortly. but maybe the Rifle floating an hanger block did close things a bit, or not as random as before
Hoyt i understand on a typical day but i do not give a hoot about shootin 4 or 5 shot groups through this thing Ever...... sometimes i miss the first one, sometimes i need the 3rd one an its a coupe de grace... to be fair. (point blank distance)
im not looking to draw much conclusions, i just want a few shots to hit in the same spot give or take as little as possible, the hornadys are not acceptable now, with these loads, they were trial, the woodleigh load was attmpted last week so i was in the ball park to warrant if the mods were yay or nay..
if i load up the woodleighs again, an they land around that spot, its a go-er lol.
