Wondering if anyone knows where a guy can find a right side mag release for a 1911 this side of the border? The Mitchell release would be ideal but can't seem to find a source.

Either saw an Ambi release at one these Board Sponsors

Wanstalls
Double Tap
Freedom Ventures

Can't remember if it was a Fusion, Ed Brown, EGW or Wilson though.

Not sure your motivation - might want to read how Const. Strongquill died in parking lot at Russell, Manitoba RCMP detachment parking lot - his cruiser rammed by other guys, who shot him - he was left handed - newly issued semi-auto to RCMP had right hand eject (i.e. button on left side of grip) - full magazine found on floor of cruiser - has disconnect to prevent firing without a magazine in place. Fairly obvious he drew to defend himself and promptly ejected the magazine with his left handed grip...

Because that’s a likely scenario when engaging paper targets at a shooting range... which is what 99.9% of legally owned handguns are doing.

So if the OP is (presumably) a left handed shooter wouldn’t a right side mag release be exactly what he needs?

My wife's CZz have been converted to right side release. She's a lefty.

I put a Mitchell right side release on one of her 1911s and liked it so much, I put one on my 1911 Commander and Gov't Model. Should always have been there! Keeps my trigger finger OUT of the trigger guard on mag changes.

Mitchell told me he's having trouble with suppliers of parts he needs. He has a waiting list for his product now.

For the record I'm a right handed shooter, but I have all my guns setup with a right side mag release and use my middle finger on my strong hand to release the mag. I have never once accidentally hit the realise while gripping the gun with my right hand, so I'm sorry but I'm gonna say that may come down to training and comfortability with the equipment. I have broken my thumb several times and I have very small hands so using a standard side mag release is difficult for me without basically holding the gun completely sideways in my hands.

For the record I made the switch 20 years ago and have never had an issue shooting IDPA or IPSC with the mag release on the right side and I too am right handed. I find it faster and much easier to reload using my index finger to hit the mag release. Yo can buy parts to swap the mag release to the tight side for the 1911. Do a Google search and you should find the maker of the parts
.
The RCMP on average are way better police officers than they are handgun shooters. The fact they are issued an outdated pistol, heavy to carry with a horrible trigger is just a bonus I guess. It should be replaced with a 320 SIG or similar striker fired gun. They deserve better equipment.

Take Care
