Does anybody run without the barrel band installed on their 10/22? I took mine off today and tried about 150 rds and found that my groups were all over the place. I tried because I thought I heard somewhere that it improves accuracy without the band and have seen a few guys without the band but mine was obviously the opposite. I know the 10/22 is not as accurate as some rifles but I like it so no comments about how bad they group:D

I have plans for a new stock and bull barrel but funds won't allow right now. Just looking for a little improvement.

I've tried out three different 10/22's without the band in place, and accuracy improved noticeably in two of the three. The third one shot about the same.

My 10/22 patterned with the band off. It shot better with the band on, but I've seen others that to the oposite. Every one is different.

With the band off, can you slip a folded paper bill under the barrel from stock to receiver? Floating it might improve things.

As others mentioned it is different with each gun - similar to how each gun likes different ammo. Most reports I have heard is that the 10/22 shoots well without it, but i have heard other cases of it shooting worst with it on.

Odd that it makes it worse. Take the stock off and see if the two barrel nuts the hold the barrel to the receiver need tightening.

On mine, it think the barrel band was holding the barrel against a high point on the wooden barrel channel. A sort of an unintended bedding job, so to speak. Not great, but consistent. Removing the band removed the pressure and allowed the barrel to vibrate differently.

I never persued floating the barrel, I changed it for a Clerk and a Boyds stock.

my 10 22 shoots about the same with or without the band, in a houge or bc folder. its more dependent on ammo brand than stock or band. its a one holer with cci 36gn hp or velocitors, double that with fed bulk or dynapoints.

I have had my Ruger 10/22 Deluxe Sporter model for almost 30 years, it never had a barrel band and it still shoots great, especially with Remington Subsonics.

I have forgotten to put it on after cleaning a time or two. When I got to the range and could see absolutely no difference in accuracy. I would assume this is pretty much the norm...
