I can't say we have shot hundreds of grouse with a slingshot, probably because we don't get out often enough, but we have whacked a number.
Marbles, rocks, and even a small pinecone have done the job. Mostly blues and spruce grouse, but I do recall at least one ruffie with the slingshot.
A few ptarmigan too, but no hares.

My pops was surgical with a sling shot. He liked using marbles and ball bearings but any rock round enough to keep a decent straight line was good enough. Any critter within 10-15 yards was going down. Some of the best memories of my childhood! To bad I didn't inherit his precision.
