The infamous Maverick 88

I'm looking to purchase an all-rounder 12 gauge shotgun.

I've found the Maverick combo with the 18.5" barrel for target fun/defense and the 28" barrel for birds/trap, but it looks like the price has increased to $400. Obviously it's still worth the price as it's basically an inexpensive Mossberg 500 (and I might prefer the crossbolt safety, to be honest) but I'm just wondering if maybe there was something else I should consider before pulling the trigger on this one.

I'd like to check out EE, but alas, I'm still a newbie.

Thanks all,

I think the Winchester SXP combo is the better gun but it does cost more. Tough call honestly

That does look like a quality firearm, probably with a better fit and finish than the Maverick. For what I need it for though I'm not sure I could justify the extra expense. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a shotgun that's the same price or less than the Maverick but with superior durablity/build quality. It doesn't seem like it..

Besides, I can't find a Winchester camp/field package in stock anywhere thanks to WuFlu so I'd be buying two guns f:P:2:

Had mine for 8 years , starting to look a little worn ,but no problems so far .
have the 18.5 and 28 bbl as well

also have the maverick over /under (kahn arms/ turkey) and no complaints on it so far other than the action is still a little stiff even after about 1600 rnds

not may deals right now , demand for everything is high

I fully understand what you are saying. If price is the issue you are stuck with the maverick. Not the worst problem to have. You will also be able to find replacement and aftermarket parts, you simply won't with the SXP.

And this is what I'm looking for, something you can rough up and still have it work. No jams or FTEs and I'm a happy camper!

The only problem I'm aware of this gun having is if you drop it from too high up you may pop the elevator assembly out, but that's easy to check visually without working the action.

i have one and love it have the same 18.5 and 28 combo for all occasions ,picked up a limb saver and a pistol grip well because
i have found no reason to spend more , does what i ask every
time

It's easy to rag on the mav88 but they work. They rattle and shake. Get a lil loose and sloppy sometimes. Scratch easy and the barrels are prone to pitting if left wet but they work. You can drag it behind the truck or use it as a boat paddle it will still work.
Aftermarket parts are well established. Although id tske a mav88 over most turkish pumps out now for general use ive sold off all my mav 88s and have a couple turkish pumps to fill small roles. The materials use in the inner parts is better on the mav88 than turkish imports

Having owned both, I'm not so sure I agree with that comment. I would say my Canuck is holding up at least as well, if not better. The internals on the Canucks are made of strong materials for sure. Nothing wrong with the Mav88, but I still prefer my Canuck pump.

Hmmm.. I almost bought a Canuck too...

In the end I picked Texan over Turkish. Maybe one day I'll try one out.

My maverick 88 has been dead reliable for many years. The only gripe I have is the butt pad is rock hard, federal 1 1/4 oz slugs really put a whoopin' on your shoulder.
I regret not getting the 2-barrel set. I've looked at getting the 18.5" barrel for years but the price is almost the same as a new shotgun.

It just showed up from Tenda, 7 business days after ordering. Definitely Mossberg quality and I'm more than happy with the price!

My butt pad is a nice squishy rubber though. Honeycombed, says Mossberg. Is that the same one?

Best bang for your buck shotgun on the market. Had mine cerekoted Elite Smoke because I wasn't a fan of the glossy cheap looking black finish. Love it.

Looks nice! What'd that cost you? I'd upload a pic of mine if they'd give me the ability. This forum is awfully restrictive lol

I like my canuck and actually brought it north to serve for protection picking berries when not accompanied by my mastiff. Comparing it to a mav88 side by side the canuck is tighter and less rattly but it is plagued with tooling marks. A gap in the joint of the barrel lug and previous experiences with the entire canuck line up on clays games leads me to believe the mossbergs use better materials. Ive yet to see a canuck show on my skeet field without issue. Once fixed they seem to run fine. I doubt ill ever need to draw mine in a berry patch but its nice knowing its there and loaded with hardcast slugs over a heathy dose of hs6.
If choosing a one for generat purpose id have gone with the mav88 2 barrel combo over the canuck but i wanted the shorter barrel for storing in the hull of my kayak
Time will tell and ill likely have another 1000 rounds thru my canuck by years end. Ive actually been thinking of picking up another to avoid having to swap stocks. The price point is justifiable to be lazy lol

About the only issues with the 88 are extractor springs bending and the forend stakes breaking. Seems more common on the 500s then the 88s but ive come across a few. I think the canuck is better in that regard. Plus i like the wood even though they tend to be fairly soft compared to the birch or beech of the mossberg 500s
