Best deal on a cheap semi .22 right now?

Get the cheapest 10/22, shoot it, and see how you like it. If you like it, you can turn it into a 12" barrel lightweight pack gun, or a heavyweight target rifle. Literally everything on it is upgradeable down the road if you choose.
 
Hey PolarMan - Glad to hear you found a Marlin-60. Over in the Valley? I never got to that store when I lived in Hfx, now in Moncton with only a BP and one local gunstore - Dr. Deals. He has some good prices on both guns and ammo, usually better than BP. And does on-line sales. Speaking of BP, just a note - I bought a couple boxes of the Herters bulk .22, and found they are pretty good at $25/500. 36g HP-HV. Not as good as CCI-MM 36HP but half the cost for practice.

Just read your pm. Nice deal and the trip to Chester is a nice drive. Hope you had good weather for it. Is yours the solid wood or the laminate? Mine is a laminate made in 2014 in Mayfield KY, before they moved to AL.

BTW - Maple Leaf said the 10/22 is most sold. That's wrong in that over the years the Marlin 60 has higher total sales from what I've read. Perhaps lately Rugers have a larger portion of sales, but that's more due to people spending hundreds to 'make' the rifle 'their way'. Starts with high price, then add $$ to make it work right. Marlins and Savages work right 'fresh out of the box'.

Changing shooter tastes have made the 10/22 more popular in recent years. Perhaps tube mags have fallen out of favor, and magazines became the norm.

Or perhaps Marlin doesn’t build enough 60s and variations to supply the demand.

I still regret selling my 2 60s. My 10/22, which couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, I regret only because it had a cool side folding stock.

Only have bolt action 22s now.

Here's an 'old' discussion of the relative merits of the Marlin and Ruger. Predominant opinion is that the Marlin is most always a more accurate rifle, even after Ruger 'mods'. If you want 'Tacti-cool' then the Ruger is the ticket, if you want accuracy and more money for ammo the Marlin is the way to go.

As for popularity, "Study shows . . ." - ( I couldn't find current figures - Ruger may be pulling ahead if Tacti-cool remains more popular )
