An older British gentleman who lives in my area has a Browning High Power 9mm for sale. I don’t know how old it is or how long he has had, it but I get the idea It is an older firearm. He describes it as a classic.

I have heard good things about these and have been told that older may be better?

What kind of price range should I be considering? I think he is asking $850.

Hoping to take a look today or tomorrow but wanted to have a bit of an idea of what to look for and what they are worth prior.

I went and took a look. Not as old as I thought. He has only had it 6-7 years (he is guessing). He bought it new. Has two magazines. Seems to be good shape with no obvious external damage.

There are a couple of major groups of Browning HPs. Not all are equal.

The only one deserving of the handle "classic" is a wartime Canadian Inglis Mk I military gun with three matching serial numbers and the Lend Lease decal. The Germans made the Belgians make HPs when they occupied the plant, so some will have swirly crosses and dirty birds.

There are several groups of commercial Brownings, with or without adjustable rear sights. For a fat grip 9mm, they were the blued standard for generations. Recently Dominion Arms imported some Turkish made clones. Browning had some super fancy inlaid models with snazzy walnut cases. Not my cup of tea. I think they were almost all assembled in Portugal, and many have a Montreal, PQ stamping. The Mk II and III have better safeties and slightly different lines.

If he is selling a commercial Browning $850 would be my upper limit with everything else included. If he is selling an Inglis, smile and pay $850 and take every mag available. You'll be doing well in the long run. The surplus Mk II and IIIs are about $200 less at the best, and they are still coming onto the market in large enough numbers.
