So me and a buddy can never come to agreement on the Famas. I think it's a good looking weapon, with a proportion and utilitarian look to it, he just thinks it's plain out ugly and that's final. So I'm looking for some feedback on what your guys take on it is. If you're unfimilar with it, it's currently the standard rifle in use with French forces.

Buddy is correct.

pointless discussion- if i remember correctly there were only a few in canada when the last round of prohibs came in, they're prohib by name in the act, and the guy in edmonton that lost his and challenged big time lost-the old firing line in calgary had one for sale at one time,( that was probably where it ended up) ,i got to actually hold it, and to tell the truth, i thing the AUG is a better idea in a lot of ways- and the ar platform is FAR superior- but i'm a long range /308 kind of guy- if i also remember correctly , while you could change it over from right to left by simply changing the deflector around, i was also told it would take m16 mags and bayonets- i just happened to have my kit with me, and this one would do neither- left it there

I used and carried it when training with French Forces in Northern France in early 1988. It is quite a good weapon. Short and compact. Very reliable with French steel cased ammo. All of the Canadians loved it a first but after using and shooting it a bit I don't think anyone would trade their C7 for one. Not that anyone thought it was bad, just that the C7 was better (except for the length, C8 is better all-round).

I've never fired one. I have handled ones issued to a French Alpine unit training in Canada. I found the balance to be better that an AUG that we had for comparison. Handled quite nicely. Forget about appearance, that's an irrelevant consideration with a firearm like this. I've used an AUG, handled the FAMAS, and fired the Tavor. I would pick the Tavor, out of the three.

Pretty much useless in the original configuration with the downloaded 5.56mm ammo, I think the newest version is up to NATO specs as far as ammo goes. I don't like the way it handles and the trigger is crap.

We're not talking about how good it fires or how nice the ergonomics are though.

The question is whether you think it looks good or not.

Hey Rich, you didn't happen to be in the 2PPCLI at that time, eh?
