Remmington 788 .308

The HK PSG-1 was only MOA capable at best & was conceived as a counter terrorist rifle after the Munich Massacre in '72. I've shot a couple of them and they are nifty units, but the 788's will spank the HK autos fer tiny group shootin'.

The rear locking lugs create brass stretching?

You could be more specific.. the belief that the longer bolt body between the shell and the lugs compressed like a rubber ball allowing brass room to compress it and stretch out the case, but ask folks that have one if this is the case.

The lee enfield is also a rear locking lug action. Similar to the 788 is the Steyr model M. What can be shared about brass stretching with those? I suspect head spacing is more of a concern, or reloading.

My comments are based on experience. I have a fairly large bag of 6BR brass here that is stretched from hot loads in a 788. Saw the same thing with my 308 target rifle on the 788 action. These were 70,000 psi loads.

Yes, rear locking actions will flex under hot loads. If you keep your loads around factory pressure levels this isn't an issue. I've owned probably a dozen of these rifles. All were accurate, some unbelieveably so for a cheap rifle. Still have two. One in 7mm-08, carbine, and another converted to shoot 6mm-284. These were great rifles for the money, at the time. - dan

Real world experience has real value, thanks for more details on that.

How many uses did you get out of the brass and how did the action shoot if you don’t mind? What manufacturers brass were you using?
