7mm-08 or 6,5CM

and only two powders broke 2900

How many 7mm-08 rifles have a 26" barrel? TC Encore and the long gone Rem 700 Varmint come to mind. Probably getting outside the realm of a topic on elk rifles. Creedmoor will be faster in a longer barrel too. The gap doesn't widen

Looking at factory ammo- in this case I picked Federal Fusion as I see plenty of it in many different cartridges used at the range by hunters- we see with 140gr bullet

7-08
2850 FPS 2181 300YD

6.5 Creed
2725 FPS 2142 300YD

Still don't think any animal will be able to tell the difference, they are very close.

7mm08 has an advantage of energy, velocity and frontal area, it may not be a huge advantage but it's there. If picking a cartridge for elk & it had to be a 7mm08 or 6.5 I'd take the advantages of the 7-08 , but I ain't never kilt an elk.

The 6.5 CM is a great target round. Never does it come up as an elk cartridge. And you don't need to kill an elk to know that much.

.338 Federal has more recoil that your average shooter can handle, leading to poor shooting.
For the hunter shooting 6.5 CM and 7 mm08 the crux is bullet placement, and the discipline to not shoot when circumstances are not right.

I have them all - 6.5 CM 7-08Rem 308Win and with the 338 Fed I do not find the recoil much different then a 308 myself ! RJ
