7mm-08 or 6,5CM

The 6.5 CM is a great target round. Never does it come up as an elk cartridge. And you don't need to kill an elk to know that much.

Interesting factoid, both cartridges were designed for match shooting not hunting, the Creedmoor for National course and the 708 for Silhouette!
I have a very accurate 7X57 in the basement, and a super accurate 260 Remington as well, but if II were going elk hunting neither of them would go with me, as I also have two rifle with a lot more case capacity that will drive heavier bullets better.

Let me scour youtube to see who's killed an elk with a 243. Then fabricate a quickload scenario and call it an elk cartridge.

Never? I killed my bull with a CM last year. Worked just as well as my 30-06 did on previous ones. ;)

Go0d to here, actual experience. Thx everybody for the feed back. Maybe more guys should get out and try the CM on big game. The range I will be shooting at will be under 300 yrs so there shouldn't be any co concerns. The .300 is for anyting over that.

Which would you recommend as an elk rifle combo?

OP mentioned the long action T3 so lets use that platform. :)

1. 6.5CM loaded with a premium bullet.
2. 30-06 loaded with a premium bullet.

Just gonna say this.

As the cartridge capacity increases it increases your distance at which you can take said game at with a proper projectile, yes, it is that simple.

To say one "isn't" an elk cartridge is rubbish.

50 yards , 30/30
150 yards ish , 303
200 yards ish , .243
300 yards ish , 260/7-08,308,270
400 yards ish , 280 , 30-06
500 yards ish , 7RM , 300WM

Of course this is just round about numbers so no need to discus decimal points on ballistics , just saying that there is parameters in which your cartridge design will work within.

For the ethics police, please disregard any reference to shots of 107.6 yards or greater on any game animal.

Imagine that, heh! ;)

We've also taken several deer over the last few years with the 6.5CM. No negatives to report. Works well. I'll probably use it, loaded with the 127LRX, to fill my Bull Moose tag this year.

Looking at using a Tikka T3x in 6.5 CM or same rifle in 7mm08. Haven't hunted with either of those chamberings. Looks like I can get the rifle in at 7 lbs all up. I have a 6.5 CM now but wondering if a 7mm08 would be a better choice for shots inside 400yrs or so.

As per the OP .....

You already have a 6.5CM in a T3. A 7-08 will offer heavier bullets, but not by much so would be fairly similar to what you already own.

Why not look to something that will offer more bullet weight over you 6.5 than a 7-08 will? I mentioned the 30-06, but one could also go with a 7mag or 308 to mention a couple.
