7mm-08 or 6,5CM

I wouldn't hesitate to use the 6.5x55 or 7x57 on Elk with a 140 grain Partition. Now if I were to buy a dedicated Elk rifle, it would probably be a 300 Win Mag.

Read post #75. I have 2 long action 30 cal rifles already. I might still go 7mm08 yet,. Just picked up a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40 CDS windplex to mount on top of which ever rifle I go with in the end.

Got it, your Browning is still heavier than the T3x. Still if weight reduction is primary issue, the Tikka T3x is still one action made for either short, long or magnum chamberings: the only differences you'll find in a T3 action from a 7mm-08 vs. 280 is position of bolt stop and magazine. You are interested in a lighter (a factor I appreciate having humped a long action with 24"+muzzle brake up and down mountains and through thick brush) compact rifle. Not to detract from the T3, I like them but it is still a long action rifle that you are buying. I just don't see the point in giving up the higher performance one gets from say, a 280 vs. 7mm-08 when you are still carrying the long action. That's just my reasoning anyway: if that is inconsequential to you carry on I just had to chime in on the universal size of T3 actions in case you were not aware.

If one wishes to pick at small weight losses: larger caliber on similar sporter barrel profiles will mean thinner barrel walls and less weight. Half a millimeter caliber difference might only be a couple hundred grains, but whole millimeter might net an ounce.

Stick with the 6.5cm. I'm a huge fan of the 7mms (just bought a 7mm08 myself) but they're so close that I can't see a significant advantage in one over the other.

7mm08 is one of the cartridges Randy Newberg shoots, and he has killed a pile of elk. Put a quality bullet in the right spot and 6.5cm should have the same effect.

Thx, I am aware of the technical aspects if the Tikka. Yes there are lighter rifles out there but to find one in left hand is much more expensive and just not justifiable right now. Even with the Tikka's modest weight, I will loose about 2 pounds from my current set up which I believe to be very beneficial to me, I have seriously considered the Kimber 84 Hunter platform based on it's light weight but again they are right handed.

Ah. A fellow southpaw. That narrows options significantly, especially if a guy is looking for a fairly light, SS/Synthetic class rifle.

My LH T3x 6.5CM isn’t fussy, functions & shoots well. Even with what Tikkas cost now, you can spend a lot more and get a lot less.

Sweet group!

I have both, personally i like the 7mm-08 better for knockdown power. 140gr Nosler Accubonds are the perfect medicine for these critters! My daughter and I both have one, we both shoot the same ammo, one shot one kill, just like the old Nosler commercials say. I was so impressed by the knockdown power, i went out and bought a 7mm-08 for myself.
Now if you want a 6.5, get the PRC or the the weatherby RPM!

Heard Randy say in one of his videos that "if you have a deer rifle, then you have an elk rifle!" and that seemed very fair to me.

That said, hunting big critters with a 6.5mm bullet, even though I never aim to take the toughest angle shot possible, I'll be a bit pickier still. Not a bad thing.

If i was spending a fortune on going to hunt a rare opportunity perhaps I might take bigger along but if the worst happens is I get out of work and get to be outside and watch a moose walk because I didn't have a good presentation? A fellow could do a lot worse.

Otherwise not worried about it at all.

in my near stores, the big cabelas, I can only find a few boxes of 7mm-08, while a full row of 6.5cm .....just for your reference ; 7mm-08 is fading away....

I have stuck with the 6,5 CM. Got it sighted in, just trying to find a good hunting load. I think it will be a good choice in the end. 7lbs 4oz all up with the new VX3i on top. Gonna order the CDS turret as soon as I decide on a load. Gonna choose between 140 ABLR, 143 ELDX, 135 Hybrid Hunter and 130 Terminal Ascent. All factory ammo. It is about 2lbs lighter than the rifle I carried last year and a lot less recoil (.300 Win Mag) A good thing since I have recently injured my rotator cuff on my shooting shoulder..

I have BOTH ! The 7-08 will shoot a 120-140 Gr a lot Faster then a 6.5 CM will so it gains a advantage in KNOCK down power ! RJ

Why not a premium bullet like a Partition or Barnes TSX/TTSX? I'd think that they would be a wise choice with a smaller bore rifle for heavier game.

The Accubond Long range is one I am trying. TSX/TTSX come in very light weight bullets for the 6.5 CM, like 120 gr. Didn't think they would be heavy enough...
