So with fading memory im stuck with a hopper of powder. Its either varget or h4895. Any way to tell them apart? They sure look the same to me.
Looking at what ive loaded and the fact the measure was set for 25 grs i loaded 223 last which happens to be the stsrting load for each so either way im lucky i can just load till the hopper is empty. I normally keep the bottle on the table but a month ago i cleaned up the gun room

I just looked at both side by side. I can't see a difference, visually. Same diameter and length kernels, same color, to my eye.

I empty the hopper every time it is used to reduce the amount of moisture absorbed and prevent powder mixups. One container of powder goes on the bench at the start of a loading session, it gets poured into the hopper, and stays on the bench until the loading session is over, and the hopper is emptied back into it. No other powder containers are allowed on my bench during a loading session.

Yes, the immediate problem of is it 4895 or varget is not something I can solve through the internet. The problem of leaving mystery powder in the hopper IS something I can help with, which is why I posted my procedure.

My recommendation? Toss it. Are we 100% sure its either varget or H4895? If those are the only two powders he owns then it would be reasonable to load a few test rounds at minimum charge with it, and compare against the same charge weight in both varget and h4895. A chronograph might tell the difference, or point of impact shift might show which it is. How much powder is in the hopper? $20 worth? Is this really worth trying to figure out when weighed against the potential consequences?

It is either one or the other.

The dispenser was set at 25gr which is the starting load for both powders with 40gr 223. I loaded 15 rounds to start load delopement but since i cleaned up my gun room i cant remember which i poured in the hopper. I can fire them off and start again easily enough. Normally i run out the hopper and leave the bottle out so i know what i was working on but my wife needed an ambulance mid waythru my loading and my memory is going rapidly down hill

Im going to start writing everything down now.

Anyway loading another 50 or 60 rounds to plink with isnt going to hurt and ill compare those groups to varget and h4895 after
