Saga of the AR15 Forward Assist: A Solution Searching for a Problem

I'm of mixed feelings about it. It's not that difficult to grab a round, put the tip in the notch on the carrier and push forward, hard if need be. May or may not be quite as much leverage as FA but it works.

And you can load silently with your thumb in the notch as well so not really buying that as the advantage.

I guess it makes sense for a little bump to maybe help clear some grit so it operates properly after that simple action, but if it needs force consistently then obviously there's a real problem going on that needs addressing. AT BEST you have a single shot rifle at that point.

I get the point of the FA addition and POSSIBLY even seen a bit of advantage but the same actions can more or less be accomplished without it.

I’ll take a FA option on any rifle. I had a issue once while trying to shoot a AR-10 style rifle in the in -15C, the rifle was a bit dirty, ~200rds and the lube I was using at the time (fire clean) made it impossible for it to chamber a round. My buddy also has had issuies out coyote hunting in the snow.

If people were properly trained to handle their weapons, the forward assist wouldn't be a problem.

People love to blame the gear, but the blame generally tends to fall on the operator.

Super useful when the Afghan moon dust gets in the actions or when you fell in a wadi. It has it’s use in winter warfare too.

I prefer to have it and not need it that needing it and not having it. And I’m properly trained on it :p
