Don't really know much about 22's. Would like a relatively inexpensive one just to play around with at the camp or in my back fields.

So many options so just not sure what to go with. Would like accuracy, but doesn't need to be perfect by any means. Won't be hunting with it.

Would prefer semi auto but not necessary.

Define "relatively inexpensive" ?

Don't really have a range. If a decent gun is $250 but a really good intro gun is $350 I'd buy the better one. Just an example of course. My point is I don't really have a range in mind.

Just don't need the best of the best. I'll just be shooting pop cans and paper, so anything decent/good will work.

In that case, I'd get a Ruger 10/22.

They go for 350$ish when on sale and you can't beat that semi auto for that price.
Parts and mags everywhere, reliable and it's proved.

only 1 thing against the 10/22. The mag is limited to 10 rds.
If that's not an issue then for you then its absolutely your best choice

I have a GSG-16 because i wanted large mag's and "taticool"
GSG has multiple fun semi-22's in your price range and they are all pretty accurate

Savage 64 semi-auto around $175; Savage A-22 semi OR B-22 bolt - around $350; Savage Mk II around $300 . All more accurate than 10/22 ( $350 UP ) out of the box. ALSO Marlin 60 or 795 around $250 - also more accurate than 10/22. The XTs are too.

Personally, I would look for a good used rifle. There are all sorts available, and many of the older rifles from the 50s and 60s are better made and shoot as well or better than many new offerings. Might be better value for the money.

Remington 597. They tend to be better shooters than 10/22s out-of-the-box and dont need any mods. There are hammer spring and sear kits available to lighten the trigger pull, and that's really all you might want to do to it. I picked one up on the EE for $200

If you decide on a 10/22, budget for a new extractor (~$20) as the factory ones can sometimes cause failures to eject more often than not.

Otherwise, it's a great gun and the options to customise it are endless.

There is that new Winchester Wildcat that seems to have some good reviews its an affordable option, The ruger 10/22 is the norm and can be easily upgraded with the massive amount of aftermarket support

You can get the SBI aluminum insert and use Remington 597 25rd mags in the 10/22.
I have a Remington Nylon Blackdiamond that shoots very well if you decide to go that route.
