I have an older Ruger 10/22 and it is really well made. Never had an issue with it.
I've had two Remington 597s and they both needed a bit of tinkering (new extractors, polishing the inside of the receiver, the guide rods and adjusting the tension of the guide rods) to be reliable. The fit and finish was not as good as the 10/22 either.
I've read that in general, 10/22s are pricier because of their popularity
