So I have been looking for a 'first rifle', more for long range shooting than hunting. I am trying maintain a budget on it and have been looking at the following: Remington 783 HBT Heavy Barrel Bolt Action Rifle. What are some thoughts on this rifle, good? Bad? Don't touch it with a 10' pole ?

I own two. if you are looking for a budget rifle I think they are a good way to go. you can often get them on sale for less than $500.00 if you are lucky / patient. mine will group 5 rounds sub moa with ammo they like. The plastic factory stock will probably need to be opened up to free float the barrel. takes less than 5 min with a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. I am seeing more and more upgrades available as well (scope rails, triggers, chassis / stocks, prefit barrels,).

I had a .223 16.5 and was very happy with it. Very solid simple rifle. Makes a good foundation for upgrades later. Some nice chassis available. Not quite the same aftermarket support as a 700 but it is getting more popular. I guess people are realizing it is damn nice $500 rifle.

For stock upgrades look at oryx and MDT. Check out the threads in the black and green precision forum. Jerry from Mystic Precision has lots of good things to say and if I recall said he'd done very well competing with a 783 as a doner action for a custom build.

I dont think you'll be disappointed. I say go for it.

Would be fine. I have one with the 24 in barrel, Easily shoots sub moa with factory ammo. Have dropped it into an Oryx Chassis now. Makes a decent range gun that doesn't break the bank. Got it for $451 to my door a few years ago from a site sponsor. Keep an eye on te EE.
