Just looking for thoughts as to what components would you pick for a dream build hunting rifle.

Criteria: 1) Easy to carry relatively compact rifle capable MOA out to 400 yards for the usual Canadian game.

What would you pick ?

a) Action
b) cartridge that is not a big magnum
c) barrel ( make and contour)
d) Stock ( make and style)

Budget under 4K without scope.

I would like for myself...,
T3 action, Atlasworx AI AE type, possibly with the plastic magpul 5 shot mag.
30-06 or 300wsm or 300wm (400yds would still be 308 territory so 30-06 most likely)
Bartlein carbon with the new barrel steel if possible 24" Sendero profile small shank to suit T3 if possible
Stock tactical style in carbon fibre, we make our own so easy choice.
Topped with a 3-20x50 PMII ultra short.
edi

A) Mauser 98 action,
B) 6.5x55,7X57 or 8X57
C) Krieger heavy sporter with express sights 22"-24" long
D)Boyds laminate stock

Already did this, but not for under 4k

c) barrel ( make and contour) 22" featherweight or No. 2
d) Stock ( make and style) Nice piece of English walnut and hire somebody to carve it to look like a stock

Budget under 4K without scope.but not with that budget

i would buy a nice cooper in 300 wsm and use remaining funds for glass.

I always wonder what's wrong with Cooper's because Prophet River has a ton of them on the used/consignment list. They are not mainstream rifles, so you wouldn't except so many of them being dumped on the same website. There has to be an issue with so many people dumping them, mostly near new condition.

They are phenomenal rifles. Probably just too nice for people to take hunting.

Already had it built quite a few years ago!
Action: Ruger falling block (#3)
Cartridge: 303 British
Barrel: McGowan half round/ half octagon - English sporter weight
Wood walnut ( Treebone carving blank)
Gunsmith : Bill Leeper
Cat

Two possible builds, both for Leeper.

Option 1:
- Rem 700 Titanium action.
- Timney trigger.
- Gailard barrel, 270Win, 1:9 twist, Featherweight contour, 3/4 length flutes, finished at 24"
- McMillan Edge, blindman stock.
- Talley one pice rings.
- Swarovski Z3, 3-10X42 BRX

Option 2:
- Sako 75 action.
- 35 Whelen, 1:12 twist, sported weight, fully fluted, Maker???
- McMillan thumbhole sporter.
- Swarovski Z4i 1-4X30 #4

Well I'd pick an AR-15 but since Trudeau in all of his infinite wisdom deemed them verboten, I've settled for second best - a bolt action version that takes AR parts, in 6.5 Grendel. And since I'm a fun-sized dude I like a rifle that is as lightweight and compact as possible. Which means skinny barrels, titanium and carbon fiber!
Additionally, my effective range would most likely be up to 150 yards as I don't trust my marksmanship abilities enough to get a single shot, humane kill on a deer. But since you want up to 400 yards, I'll include a barrel length and spec that I would use for that too.

Build list:

Maple Ridge Armory Renegade receiver set with bolt carrier
Barrel (150y max): Faxon Firearms 12.5" 6.5 Grendel barrel
Barrel (400y max): BSF Barrels 16" 6.5 Grendel carbon-wrapped barrel
Muzzle Device: 2A Armament X3 titanium compensator
Handguard: V7 Weapons Systems Hyperlight magnesium handguard (11 - 15 inch, depending on barrel length)
Trigger: Hiperfire competition trigger
Buttstock: Colt N1-style adjustable buttstock

From my research this build would come out to about 4.3 to 5 lbs (without optics, unloaded) in weight depending on the barrel you use, and comes out to around $2500 - $3000.
Once you factor in the optic (I'd go with a variable lightweight Leupold like the Mark AR Mod 0, 1.5-4x) it could easily go to 4000 total and weigh just over 6 pounds loaded, which in an OAL of 26" - 32" is pretty damn handy if you ask me.

If I had to get a real bolt action rifle I'd get a Sig Sauer Cross in 308 WIN with a nice Leupold 2-7x or 3-10x optic.

Probably just pick up a Tikka T3 in 257, 6.5x55, 260, .270, .280, 7m-08, etc., find the nicest lightest stock for it and toss on a Leopold VX-3i 4.5-14x50mm or similar light weight scope. Probably come out at about 2.5k if done well. Could custom barrel it for another 500-1000 but I'd shoot the factory one before I removed it.
