So 45-70 is pretty hard to find right now in Halifax. Today at my favorite haunt I stumbled across the boxes of the subject line ammo and scooped them up!

I didn't notice until I got home the part about "Full Pressure Loads".

I searched the internet for the load data and PSI for these rounds but I am not coming up with anything.

I am using the Gibbs/Navy Arms 45-70 bolt action rifle. (LE No 1 Mk3 remade into 45-70).

Does anyone have any data on the above the rounds ? I want to be sure me LE action can handle them.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I would disassemble them and re-load with a reduced powder load. 45-70 easily come apart with the ballistic hammer. Full loads are just brutal and unpleasant to shoot, unless bear-hunting.

Cheers

What brand is it? Remington? If its not something like Buffalo Bore then you're probably fine.

Is this the stuff you bought? https://store.prophetriver.com/remi...0ct-21459-full-pressure-load-see-description/

If its Remington, I think think full pressure loads indicates that it is not safe for a trapdoor springfield (As they also make reduced pressure loads for the Trapdoor), but should be safe in lever guns, and your converted LE should be equal or stronger than those lever gun actions.

If he bought some niche brand like Buffalo Bore, then yes that'll have some real jam to it. If its just Remington "full pressure", its still pretty weak - 405gr at 1330fps, which is 12ga slug territory (and not a particularly spicy 12ga slug). They also make a 300gr @ 1800+fps load, which again is no spicier than a cheap 12ga slug. (As a comparison, Buffalo Bore pushes a 405gr load to 2000fps, or a ~50% increase in velocity from the Remington "full pressure" stuff)

My local BassPro is selling factory 45-70 modern rifle ammo for around $60.00-$70.00 a box of 20.
Ouch!

Ya its expensive. I have all the reloading components but I just didnt have the time and its range day. Plus I have a bank account full of that sweet tax free deployment money so a few boxes was easily allowable. Even for the family CFO :)

I recently tried some very light loads with the 405gr bullet and only 30gr of H4198 (trapdoor recipe from Hodgdon). What a soft-shooting load it is! Insanely accurate too. Out of the 12" barrel and red dot, we rang the 10" gong at a 200yds pretty consistently. Cam-pro pullet is 40 cents, 5 cents for the primer, 10 cents for the powder.
