hey gents i see a few nosler m48s for sale down under, in wsm 270, which peaks me a bit over the 7mm-08 for Alpine Sambar, that extra 100m without clicking etc appeals.

they are a bit expensive, how is it compared to my kimber 84m? weight on par albeit wsm, so 8400 spec?

im not exactly sure of the model? this is its advert here https://www.usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=169127

i think i would only look into a 270 WSM at this stage.

i see them advertised in 3006 for $2660 so im wondering why thy are askin $2990 for this one, i might enquire if feed back is ok on cgn

That’s just a gussied up howa 1500 in a porky stock. Your kimber 7-08 is twice the gun. If you want to flatten it up, buy some 120 Barnes ttsx and send them screaming.

Unless you’re backpack hunting in the alpine like the OP states. According to web weights it’s over 2 lbs heavier. No doubt it’s got some nice components but as a mountain hunting rifle I know what I’d pick.

I'm with Slimbo, the Nosler rifles are nice but not light by any means and are a Howa action finished off by Nosler. The kimber is lighter, 3-pos safety, control round feed. Not sure what's available down there, but a Howa or Weatherby Vanguard would be a better bang for your buck than the Nosler and I know the Howas have been made in the short mags. Howa Alpine would be closer to the Kimber but don't think they made any in a WSM. I know at that price point I'd take a Kimber Montana over a Nosler any day.

Nothing wrong with the Howa 1500 action if you're using it for a boat anchor

Yes; but whelenlad has a 7-08 which is an 84M, about a pound lighter than the 8400 you quote.

1 pound isn't really a whole bunch in the grand scheme of things. I own a M48 Liberty in 30 Nosler and a Kimber Montana in 280AI, plus a Kimber Ascent in 7-08.

No doubt the 30 Nosler is quite a bit heavier than both of my Kimbers but it also packs quite a bit more punch and will hold a tighter 5 shot group. The Ascent in 7-08 is a feather weight 4 lbs 13ozs the Montana in 280ai is 5lbs 10 oz

Although my Ascent is nearly 1 lb lighter than the Montana and is a joy to carry in the mountains, the truth of the matter is the Montana carries very nice too and the extra pound won't make or break your hunt.

Now this is only MHO....YMMV :)

P.S and he was asking about a 270WSM

No doubt the 30 nosler is a hammer, and if you need that much stank it may be worth the extra weight. The 270wsm and 7-08 are a bit closer and I don’t personally think the extra weight would be worth it in that comparison. You’ve got some fine rifles there. I have a mountain ascent in 280ai and I have a hard time reaching for anything else!

Yeah, I've often thought a 280aI ascent would be the ultimate rifle...:)

I picked up some 120 ballistic tips and 6.5 staball powder...suppose to give 3200ft/sec in the 7-08 but haven't yet had the time to experiment.

Heading up into Tahltan territory tomorrow to look around for a moose for 4 or 5 days. I'm taking both Kimbers the 280AI I'm shooting 162eldx and RL22, the Ascent 7-08 is 140 TTSX and Varget and my lastest is a Christensen Traverse 300 PRC with RL33 and 245EOL Bergers.
I have a hard time deciding which is going with me each morning:)

Fair enough!!! Im not that keen anymore.

You;re proberly right in regards to me 7mm-08.......

Im fond of the Kimber Montana version myself too...... im not sure if i would love the 8400 as much though? they are a tad beefed up all over- something to think about though
