Double Action Snubby

Couple pics of my snubbie. It is a Weigand Combat Custom Ruger SP101 357 Magnum. As per the pics she is heavily ported.

Does the porting seem to help much with recoil? Does it cut back your velocity much?

Bet it's loud.

I haven't had it long, and have only shot fairly light 38 special loads through it, because I have a serious pile of it. But do plan on loading some hot stuff. With the 38 special, the porting isn't all that noticeable. But I've read it really starts to perform with the higher pressure stuff. And no doubt it ups the volume a fair bit, lol. If I recall correctly the porting drops velocity about 100fps or something close.

I remember beating the snot out of my hand trying to get a Model 19 snubnose -- 2.5 inch barrel -- up over 1,200 fps with 160 grain SWC bullets on the Queretaro Range in early 2016 just before I came back up here. I mean, it was a fun afternoon, sunny and warm, mid-January and shooting a Baby Magnum, something that I certainly can't do up here anymore. I remember it was just topping out at about 1,180 fps and I determined to try some other loads using other powders but never got back to it. It will be interesting to see what you can accomplish with fullpower loads out of your Ruger.

Last week was 3" snubbie day.

Today was 2" snubbie day.

I shot each one at this kind of target set up.

Each gun was shot with two kinds of ammo - a hot load of a 148WC and a 158SWC. The idea was to remind myself where each one shoots (fixed sights) and the general characteristics. For example, the Colt Cobras and Agents have small grips that are very uncomfortable with hot loads. I like that they are light and 6 shot, but shooting them is no fun.

I only have one Charter Arms snubbie in 38. I ahve a couple in 44, and love them. This 38 is a plain Jane, bit it shoots very well.

The M12 is also light and six shots, but the rubber grip makes it a fun plinker. Shoots well, too.

Shooting was off the bench at 25 yards.

Well, when the 357mag snubbie isn't providing adequate recoil therapy, I break out the 44mag snub. With slower powders the flash always makes me smile.

I wishhh I had some of those!!! :(

I could make memes, I would change this one to say: "Pressure? We don't worry about no stinkin' pressure." But I can't, so I won't.

Keep the photos comin', Cal.

The fireworks down here are nuts. We were blowing up pumpkins and watermellons recently with "firecrackers" you don't want anywhere near you when they go off. Mexico is great.

Shot some stout 357 mag loads through it. I was amazed how effectively the porting tamed things. Aside from the noise, it was like shooting 38 target loads out of a non-ported snubby. Not sure of what velocity I am getting, but it definitely makes the gun a pleasure to shoot.

3.1 gr 148 gr hollow base wad cutter worked real well in a Smith K frame round butt
Ganderite, all your groups seem left maybe the pointy finger is tweaking that little barrel a bit

I had coffee* this morning with Murray Gardner, who is mentioned in this thread for his original leadership in forming IPSC/Canada. He informed me, sadly enough, that our good friend and former B.C. area IPSC Director Todd Birch has passed away from cancer about a month ago. I did not know until he told me. Todd (Sharps '74) and I carried on briefly with private emails outside of this thread since we became aware of each others' continued existence due to this thread. He had mentioned to me that he was in a battle with cancer but did not make it sound like it concerned him.

Anyway, Todd, my hat's off to you. You were one of "the Old Guard" for darned sure. I know, I was there.

* Well, I had coffee. Murray had something else.

That's too bad about Todd. He had many a fiery discussion here, and was not shy about sharing his views on things. He did a lot more for the gun community than most, and will be missed by many. We could use a bunch more like him.

I fully agree. When I was an IPSC Director, it was Todd that scared me the most. In fact, he was the only one who made me nervous and cautious to advance any opinions I had that were not well thought-out because then -- as here on this forum -- he could be all over you for suggesting something he strongly disagreed with. Now, I agree, I was then and continue to be a "long-haired hippy type", but still. Murray Gardner treated me very well, he even stayed at my house in Brandon. I travelled to many matches including the Bianchi Cup and saw Murray constantly at many of them and we always were on the phone in those days. Ken Kulach -- the Saskatchewan Director -- and I were actually good friends. I would go to Regina to shoot and often stayed at Ken's house. When we went to the Bianchi Cup, I went in a Winnebago with Ken and his wife, Rick Miller and his wife and #### Lear and his wife.

But Todd was a wild card. I always thought he considered me to be "not one of 'them'" and I was always quiet around him because I knew that maybe I had charmed the others but Todd might not be falling for it. Murray Gardner always laughed about it when I told him my thoughts on this and told me I was inventing ghosts. Even today (this morning) Murray's wife laughed and said that I was "much younger than all of the others." Okay, that's true, too.

Reconnecting with Todd through this thread sort of laid all that to rest, and we were emailing each other -- not constantly but sort of now-and-then regularly about things IPSC and gun-related. He asked me about my thoughts on some of the finer details of the "illegal and non-permitted concealed carry" and things like that beyond which might be normally written about in the public forum. We had talked about trying to meet up once the travel regulations were relaxed. That was our last exchange. And then today, Murray broke the bad news.

You are right that we could use more like him and I thank you for saying it.

Someone who knew him & knows the circumstances should put up a thread in the CGN "The Memorial" forum about his recent passing:

https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/436-The-Memorial

For the benefit of those who also knew him that may not have seen the post(s) here & may not be aware of his passing.

My sincere condolences.
