Opinions on budget .270 rifle

Am looking to get any advice on packages or rifles i should look into. Basiclly im on a budget so the cheaper is better and im essentially looking for a rifle that is pretty compact/light. I have a 300 win.mag but id like a "deer" rifle that wont put a hurting on my shoulder when i walk all day.

Ive heard Savage has some cheaper rifles are they any good?

The savages are just fine... how much is your budget? The Stevens (savage) will likely run just under $400, you can also get a Tikka T3 for around $650 (guaranteed accurate) and of course with a little time on CGN you can get a nice used rifle as well.
 
Savage rifles are the best bang for your buck. Mind you, the scopes that come with the packages are low end. They'll do, but they aren't the greatest scope.
On a budget, look into buying a used rifle. You really have to work at damaging a hunting rifle. Look into a .308, .30-06 or any other non-magnum calibre.
 
yea, the reason the savage appealed to myself was that id have no problem paying around 600 some for the MODEL 16FXP3 package because it would come with a scope which would do me fine for this year. Next year i can order in a Bushnell scope through work so i could upgrade the scope and have a nice rifle. But i haven't handled a savage before and i don't want to end up with a rifle that is less than qualified.

I just dont see myself having the funds right now do pay 600 and than another chuck for rings and scope
 
If you want to go $600, might I suggest a NEF single shot? I've had a couple, and shot more. All were accurate for hunting ammo, and very compact. $300 for the rifle, and $300 for a good scope. These are very underrated, and with one screw can come apart and fit in a back pack if you want to hike in somewhere.
 
My vote goes to the Savage package guns. You want out of the box accuracy, my .270 shot a half inch high at 100 yards, and group was about 1/4 inch. Me thinks I got lucky!:D
 
thats great. Let me just say how impressed i am with this forum again and all the great advice i have gotten. Im gonna drop by wholesales tomorrow in calgary and see what they've got for stock. Again thanks for the quick replies.
 
If you get a stevens 200, buy can a of Krylon fusion paint and some fine grit sandpaper. The stock is good but rough around the edges. Krylon fusion now comes in flat finish and is very durable.
 
yea for the price of the stevens 200 i could purchase an bushnell elite off ebay for 180 bucks shipped. Thats about $515 bucks and id need the mounting gear but thats all. This may be the track that i go. Aside from the throw on scope how does a rifle like the 11FXP3 compare to the stevens? I realize its got accutrigger but anything else that would make it a better rifle?
Really its only a deer rifle so im not too concerned with the accutrigger.

I think you'll find that the Stevens 200 and the Savage 11/111 series will do fine on deer right outta the box, if you do your part. Others have reported that these rifles are more than adequately accurate, as is. Your mileage may vary... ;)
