Currently I've got a lot of the usual aftermarket stuff (bolt buffer, charging handle, mag release, bolt release and extractor), I've been using a Burris ff3 for some times now as it's basically just been my lets go plink for a few hours gun. I could zero it in better I'm sure, but is a red dot an ok sight to use for grouse hunting or should be be considering a nice rim-fire scope? (on the lower power scale of things)

Planning to keep my hunting to Vancouver Island mostly. As always, thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions.

get some bottle caps and put them out 20-30 yds., or whatever distance you expect to be shooting. If you can hit them consistently you should be good to go.

This.

Depending on how pressured the grouse are where you hunt, you may be able to just club them with the stock of the gun (......this is clearly humour)

The reasonably wary grouse here in central Ontario allow me to get to about 15m before they start getting antsy. Ive been to places where clubbing them (especially spruce grouse) was actually possible.

Glad to see the above seconded, thank you!

I use a 1-4x nikon scope. .. keep it mostly on low setting as most birdies are right close.. had a fixed 4x on before and didnt like it as it was too much... need the vari

I sight in my Hunting 22’s dead on at 25 yards. That enables almost a dead on hold out to 50 yards with CCI Mini-Mags (about 1” low)

I just sight my henry in at 50 yards and hold on where the neck meets the body.

If you see a grouse 100 yards away you are better grouse spotter than I lol.

Easy as pie, just slide the sight up and down on the ladder by lifting it slightly and pulling the stepped piece up or down to change POI.

IIRC the henry has a little knob at the end of the elevator below the sight you can use to push or pull it up or down.

being a brand spanking new hunter, and wearing glasses, I think I'll give myself the advantage to ensure ethical kills :)

That's a good attitude. But in that case I suggest getting a shotgun and keeping the shots to under 35 yards... or closer, depending on the choke.

I know lots of guys use .22 for grouse, and go for head shots.... but I'm not a fan. Lots of 'clean misses' are birds mortally wounded but fly off to die a lingering death elsewhere. beak shot off, just nicked the neck, what have you. The 'instant kill' section of a grouse head is just too small. Take the body shot if you have to use a 22.
