Hey a Quickie gents, a mate wants a new rifle for Roos and the kids, not shootin the kids but the kids shootin the roos *on permit / so i said he is best going a Howa mini......

i see one brand new been to range once but its being sold for $550, RRP about 800 here, quiestion is, will the heavy barrel be too heavy for the kids, aged 14 and growing?

its a 20 inch varmint i believe/

Thanks guys

They are a great rifle - one of the best 'factory' triggers. The only annoyance is
the magazine release - it will drop the mag at the slightest sideways glance. If being
used other than at a range, the mag should be tied to the trigger guard to prevent loss.
A couple of US after market manufacturers make better mag release levers that work in
the opposite direction to the Howa lever which cures the problem. Also, the five shot mags
can be easily cut down to three shots for a more comfortable 'flush fit' carry.

I really like the Howa too, but the mag release kinda scares me. Still looking at a 6.5 grendel. The CZ 527 is more costly, but is also a great rifle, with a great trigger and not a pesky mag release.

I have a Howa mini in 7.62x39, great little gun. No issues with mag release, haven't seen or handled a heavy barreled one so can't comment on the weight. Mine is light and great to carry.

I know of a couple of grown men that sold their HB varmint caliber rifles because they were to heavy to swing in a hunting situation( here its coyotes but I imagine hunting "roos" is similar). Shooting from a rest, they work, shooting freehand not a chance for a younger 'strength-challenged lad I think.

Funny I NEVER have any trouble with mine ! RJ

Interesting RE HB model!
i will ask him if he called the bloke today or not ,

the huntin style will be mostly Vehicle based, jump out an off the bonnet scenerio or spotlighting with these guys for a while.
shots are often 100+ on farm land where the roos are problematic at times.

Road HUNTING then ? LOL RJ

I have the Howa 1500 20 inch HB in 223 with Hogue stock and floorplate. Love the trigger, accurate with good 55g factory ammo (Federal Gold). 1-12 twist so it likes light bullets.
It is heavy, especially with it's current scope, so it's not a boy-portable rifle.

I'd lean towards a sporter contour barrel but wouldn't sweat the heavy for the described use. 14 year old boys are rapidly growing and putting on muscle and with a little success will adapt to most challenges, or at least I was.

Road HUNTING then ? LOL RJ

well often paddocks have a track so as everyone keeps to one set of wheel tracks and not have 47 wheel tracks through the few hundred Acres, So to be honest, No, no mate it is not Road hunting, its Private Land, Privately Owned some fellas bread and butter livelihood.... Im sure you have seen Farms or "Stations" in Canada rj? surely you get out more than that.

If I said Public Land, then Yeah, we are poaching off the bonnet....... but i didnt. the little things.

I’d get a t3 compact in 223 1-8” and never look back
Slimbo i not sure ive ever seen a t3 Compact down under!!

i doubt the guy rang an organised the Howa..... it might be a good thing seeing as the HB is no go, i will keep my eye out for a standard howa mini for them i rekon!

i like them an i can take itoff his hands if they dont LOL
