Berger Hunter 185gr 300WM

In the ever ongoing quest to find a bullet that my rifle likes, I bought a box of accubonds (discussed in seperate thread) and also got a box of Berger Hunter 185gr.

Anyone ever used them on moose? Thoughts, or even better: pictures? ;-)

I don't know about moose, but the 185 Classic Hunter is instant death on deer and bear in a 300. Beautiful clean carcasses, pure carnage on the inside. I've never had an exit yet, which by itself rules them out for moose for me.

You want them to deliver all the energy into the animal to ensure it dies as quickly as possible. If it goes through, that means a certain amount of energy wasn't transfered into the animal. I'd much rather punch the animal harder than for the bullet to go straight through and do another 100 yards in the woods lol.

I am not keen on these frangible bullets [Berger] on larger game animals. Particularly at close range, they can
literally "explode" without good penetration if bone of any size is encountered.

In lighter animals though, they are pretty dramatic, as Dogleg pointed out. Personally, I feel that there are so
many excellent bullets specifically designed to kill game efficiently, that I have no need to use a "match" type
to hunt with. The Accubond is one such game bullet. Dave.

I get what you're saying and tend to agree with you. Its just a matter of degree; if bullets don't exit on deer sized animals I get a little nervous about whether there will be enough penetration on larger animals like moose.

Yeah, I shoot 300WSM and found the 185g VLDs to be very accurate in my gun. I was all settled in for hunting season until I started hearing horror stories about failure at short range. Where I hunt, the elk are hard to find and when you get a chance you really don't want to blow it.

So, I plan to work up some loads of Accubonds or Sciroccos.

I used to believe in “dumping” all the bullets energy in the animal but after loosing 1 deer and spending 3 hrs looking for another deer I switched to a tougher bullet, don’t get me wrong it works great until you get a animal that bolts after being shot through the lungs and even if it only covers 100yds if there’s no pass through and there’s no snow it can be very difficult to find game especially in dense forest and in low light.
I shot 210Bergers at 2990fps and switched to 180 Swift Sirocco, definitely a lower BC but much tougher.

I'm still hooked on 180gr Hornady SST's, my 300 loves them at 3000fps. Haven't had a Moose go more than 5 yards after being hit with one. No experience with the Berger Hunter's sorry.
