I'm about to purchase my first shotgun, never actually handled or fired one, just decided it is time for me to buy one.

After reading a ton on this board, i've decided to go with a pump action due to the no limitation in rounds carried, initially i was going to buy a Benelli M4 however I've decided that I will get one shotgun first and then perhaps the benelli later. I've narrowed it down to these two, the Remington 870 and the Fabarm SDASS Pro Forces

The main requirements for this gun are durability, easy of use, easy to clean and reliability. It will be used in all weather and conditions.

The Remington I was thinking of picking up the 870 Express 7 shot 18" in synthetic $383, or the 870 XCS Marine Magnum $869 (obviously a huge price difference, which surprises me, any other 870 recomendations, do not want the wingmaster as i want synthetic furniture)

The Fabarm SDASS Pro Forces 20" $749

Is there a discrepancy in the reliabilty of these guns? I hear that the 870 is very reliable is the Fabarm as reliable? Do I have this wrong?
Is a longer barelled shotgun preferable, will it make much of a difference in accuracy? The intended use is not fowl hunting, perhaps some skeet and range work as well as woods defense etc..

Any help or reccomendation is appreciated.

You are comparing a Camaro to a Corvette.

Both do the same thing... but... one is obviously better.

(edit) As for the big $$$ difference between the Express870 and the XCS 870....read why they are different... 2 different styles of shotguns)

edit #2 :)... neither shotgun you want is intended for Skeet or Range work.........

I WOULD NOT buy a new model REM without handling it. The XCS at wholesale I handled; the bolt is rubbing the receiver and wearing off the finish. My 870MM has no such problem. I find this unacceptable for a $900 shotgun.

I am a fan of fabarms, however.... :D

Unlike a restricted firearm, you don't need a 'reason' to own a tacti-cool shotgun ...it's okay to have one 'just because'.

I just recently bought my first firearm. I got a Fabarm SDASS Trainer with the nickle finish. I haven't had a chance to fire it yet but so far I'm pretty impressed with it.

FWIW the guy at TSE told me he expected the Fabarm prices to increase as they become more prevalent in the market. He told me their reputation should be getting better and better as more people become familiar with them. Could be hearsay but it made me feel good about my purchase.

I'm assuming you mean the fabarm is better?

Unfortunetly it's hard for me to find a shop with any decent guns in stock, so handling them is not always an option. I've bought all of my guns with having never handled them, i've seen your posts about the 14" Fabarm, seems like you enjoy it quite a bit, is there any advantage to having the longer barell in the SDASS? Is the accuracy improvement significant, or should i grab the smaller 14" martial?

Very true, most of my guns i have 'just for the sake of having them', as they're all restriced, they're all used at the range only, this will be my first non restricted.

Congrats on the purchase, i've heard that the nickle finish isnt' that great, how is the condition of yours?

Now, can i expect 'to hell and back' reliability out of the Fabarm?

I am VERY happy with the 14" barrel. (Martial ProForces) The fiber optic ghostring sights are VERY accurate with slugs, and I hit a man sized silhouette 4/5 times at 100M off hand. I've also hunted grouse and turkey successfully with this set up. Light, accurate, compact, extremely corrosion resistant and GTG out of the box. It has surpassed my 870MM in terms of shotgun trust. Those are BIG boots to fill. :D

FWIW, I bought a 870 Express as my first shotgun and wished I bought a Fabarm at the onset. Look at it this way: 400 for 18" 870 Express, add 150-200 for ghost ring sights, add 300-350 for a 14" barrel and add another 100-150 for a pistol grip stock equals a Fabarm AND money saved, even if you didn't get the 14" barrel you're less than 100 bucks away from the Fabarm.....maaaaaaannnnnnnnnnn this is starting to depress me. ;) :( Crap, I'm going to have to buy me a Fabarm Martial ProForces sometime soon....I just have to get my nerve up to do it (married with children and whipped). :runaway:

Looks like a fabarm is joining the family.

Now i just have to decide which one, 14" or 20"

what is the oal of the 14"? does anyone know the oal of the 20" i've not been able to find it.

Dosen't that go against the retailers claiming our prices are higher becuase we are a smaller market?? If they are getting more popular, that means they are selling more ....so why charge more??

What about out fantastic dollar...we are beating up the euro too!
Must be some Huge price increase to offset both of these factors....

One thing to consider before dismissing the Rem 870 is that you can buy a Knoxx spec-op recoil reducing stock for it whereas you can't for the Fabarm.

I'm thinking about picking up one of the 12.5" CanadaAmmo Chinese Remington 870 knock-offs. They come with a regular fixed stock and a pistol gripped stock (yikes). The plan would be to buy a Knoxx stock (either the spec-op or the breacher pistol grip) and that way I will have one shotgun and three different stocks to play with all for less than the cost of the Fabarm. If the shotgun thing grows on me then perhaps I'll pick up a Fabarm down the road.

For cheap I enjoy everything about my 870 express except the rustability of the finish.

That is why I bought the MM 870 in nickel finish. Niiiiiice fricken gun. Love my marine mag. I have the xcs in bolt action and i like the finish, so I figure the XCS in 12 .ga should be pretty nice too.

As far as the XCS vs. sdass i think they are both purdy. While I love my new remmington's I've been hearing that their QA is starting to suck. I hear the SDASS kicks ASS. The only defense for remington might be that most/all accessories are made for the 870 and gunsmiths KNOW the gun. The Fabarms, maybe less so.

Either way I think you won't make a mistake.

FYI, the Knoxx-Fabarm adapters on on the way from BBB. TSE is testing the protos as I write this. Go Fabarm....I have a 14" MPForces, excellent excellent gun....throw a rail under the foregrip and add a comfy vertical grip......very nice indeed.

Like I said, I haven't had the chance to put some rounds through it yet but out of the box it looked spot on. I didn't notice any marks or blemishes at all.

I think the idea is that as more people handle Fabarms the repuatation will increase and the demand for them will also increase. This could justify an increase in price. The guy could have been talking out of his ass trying to make a sale. But the gun was pretty and I liked the way it felt.

I was told that the Fabarm branded telescoping stocks are actually rebadged Knoxx stocks. I haven't purchased one yet though so I don't know if it's true.

I have a Fabarm martial composite. My only regret is that I should have looked at the pro forces. Pistol grip stock aren't my thing, but I wouldn't mind the ghost ring sights and the rail. Other than that, I love my fabarm. I had a mossy 500, and in my eyes, the fabarm blows it away.
