Really? And what does that entail?
As an RSW (Registered Specification Writer), I know what goes into a specification. I also know that you can have quality of material and construction with it not necessarily written into the spec.
Having served 12 years in the military, I'm also painfully aware of some of the afterbirth that gets stillborn from a military specification.
'Mil-Spec' isn't always what it is cracked up to be.
You are correct - many civilian destined firearms meet and surpass military standards. Some by a very wide margin.
What I'm objecting to is using this 'it isn't going into combat, therefore it can be sh!t and break all of the time' argument that a 'sporting' rifle can be poorly executed and go through a litany of manufacturer's warranty claims because it isn't being sold into service. It's nonsense.
You can post cherry-picked 5 round groups until the cows come home. It doesn't change the fact these rifles just don't shoot that well over the long haul, and MPI grows with rounds in the group.
I'm not complaining though, it is a cheap barrel attached to a cheap rifle - it gives adequate performance for the cost.
Look, my rifle ran mostly flawless for the time I had it (I did a review where I stated I changed out the extractor spring and tuned the gas block after the first outing), so if I just looked at my experience, these things are a home run. Problem with that is a fair number have had problems with broken rifles. Far too many for it to be isolated.
You can bury your head in the sand if you want, but people should just be realistic in what to expect from this rifle with respect to accuracy and reliability.
Non stop exposure to the formation of the requirements and ensuring that we met them. When we made something it had to work in -50c to +55c, to say that the things we made had to work no matter what would be an understatement. Did we make anything invincible? of course not, was it perfect? absolutely not but in the best possible way every consistently testable scenario was worked on.
Mil-Spec isn't just materials as you should know, its about usage conditions, intuitive use, human factors etc. Mil-Spec is often rubbish, not because the reasoning is rubbish but because what works for a tens of thousands strong organisation with legacy equipment isn't the same as what works for joe bloggs the range warrior.
Agreed, I am of the opinion that firearms are a sufficiently well known technology that really there's not much of an excuse for it these days. I've no issue with expecting reliability, good quality or more I just don't expect my WK180C to perform quite as well as my service rifle during some scenarios.
No cherry picking there, it's disappointing that you think that.
4300 rounds in and mine was still shooting just as good groups.
There's no burying of heads in sand, I've outlined all the issues I had and my expectations for it being limited to the value paid for it.
Do I recommend the rifle? Absolutely within the capabilities of what it can do.
Can you possibly link to your review or comment further here? Is changing the extractor spring something that most new owners should probably consider? Any recommended parts?
Solutions:
- Tighten set screw to very tight on receiving rifle
- Have replacement piston and spring
- Get spare cocking handles (If the left side one breaks you can put it in the right side slot and use it that way while a replacement is sent to you)
- Have spare bold carrier to allow for one to be away for replacement
NB: I was provided the older Bolt Carrier Group with the magnetic/push in handle instead of the threaded one. This has chewed up the inside of my rifle more but to no functional impact. With that said it has also not broken any more cocking handles since then.

Was not my intention to deride the thread, posts or the rifle....just to temper expectations and offer my opinion on the rifle.
Thanks for the review. I wonder if they beefed up the extractor spring more recently or it's the same as before.
Good advice... perhaps when I get my first failure I'll request some extra parts. BTW, someone pointed out that the the thread for the charging handle is 6mmx1 so I have a few bolts thrown in my range bag now just in case I need to work the bolt in a rough way. This is one gun where you're going to want to keep the shipping box!

It's worth noting that mine might be a comete lemon and not the usual experience

... but there have certainly been enough reports around here of various part failures... particularly charging handles.That's awesome... you got the can with the brake? How did that change the flash/recoil? Was it noticeable in anyway?
Also, nice optic... what is that?
Finally, what are you using for ejection protection... is that tape? I might just start with some black hockey tape and see how that goes.
It is Snowboard/skateboard Grip Tape, kinda like sand paper that sticks to anything and is tough as hell.
The Can/Brake didn't really change the felt recoil at all, it is quite manageable for follow-ups. The Brake certainly is Not what my $200 Brake feels like on one of my AR's, but feels good.
That optic is a 1-4 Barska with illuminated reticle from Cabelas - wanted to try a cheap unit and i couldn't be happier for $220!
there is no problem, you will get a few little brass smudges on the rifle, that's literally it.

I'm still thinking about an optic, but heavily leaning towards an Eotech. I just love those optics.
I'm also looking at getting a T-Rex Arms sling as I love their stuff (already got an Orion belt and their Ragnarok holster for my Glock).

You'll certainly have a lot of fun with that list! I would suggest getting some Cross mags or some 10/20s as 5 rounders are a killer.
I'm still going to try and point you toward an Elcan, it's not too much magnification or too little
