What Bullet is best for Moose?

Yes, I've shot several moose over the years with gristle encapsulated bullets as well, including Mono's.

Most of these came from a specific drainage where it use to be the norm to spot 30+ moose in a single day from a few higher vantage points.

Good marksmanship and ethics will always trump caliber and bullet design.

Why was the encapsulated bullet against the shoulder bone? I'm thinking the bullet would not have been found if it was a few inches back and/or launched from a couple hundred yards closer.

I for the heck of it just took inventory of my reloading bullet cabinet...I've got 52 different bullet choices which include everything from Hornady BTSP's, to GMX's, to Nosler AB's, E-tips, Partitions, Speers, Barnes tsx, ttsx etc etc. to choose from

I've also got on hand 25 different powders from which to choose.

I use all different bullet types in different rifles, some rifles my load is Monos, some rifles bonded and some cup and core.

IMH Eperience, the Bergers will drop them on the spot, in their tracks more often than any other bullet.... YMMV :)

With 52 bullets and 25 powders you have approxiamtely 78367246720143449328 combinations, and pretty much all of them will kill a moose... When you do your part.

LOL, very true but with everything else being equal, it's the Bergers that put'em down the quickest...again, just my personal observations :)
 
You almost never see a bang flop shot on a moose. They seem impervious to hydrostatic shock and will walk 30-50 yards and stand until dead. I hunt alone off the water and begrudge that extra 50 yards heavily (pun intended). 300 grain .375 partition high shoulder shot works. Berger’s are for deer on the farmland.

I agree 100% I love Berger bullets for competition. They do so well on paper, etc.
For use in the field, There are so many game bullets that trump the Bergers. IMHO.
I know personally of 2 animals lost when shot with them, so like any bullet, they are not foolproof.

Anyone who chooses to use Bergers must be absolutely certain that they will reach the vitals.
This may mean a lot of patience, waiting for the proper presentation. This patience many hunters
do not possess.

I want a bullet that will reach the vitals from any angle that I am presented, even if substantial
bone is encountered by said bullet. This is where the Berger fails to qualify. Dave.

Yeah I hear ya, but the barnes test is now deleted, like in gone, vapour, vamoosed.

The Berger link and ink is still there for all to read, see and interpret....:)

Barnes own test showed the Berger VLD when having to penetrate bone before entering the gel actually out performed the barnes bullet and is why the link no longer exists.

Full disclosure, I’ve never shot any game with a Berger bullet and I didn’t see the deleted Barnes video. I’ve only shot wet newspapers with the Berger and got the posted results. I have a hard time imagining that a Berger bullet would have done better on a moose shoulder joint (and that was a small bull) that prevented a 250gr TTSX from a .375 magnum from fully penetrating and get mangled.
