GSG 16 Powder blowback

I finally took my GSG 16 our for a ride a couple weeks ago. One thing I noticed as my dad gave it a go and I stood a bit to close to him was that there is a lot of burnt powder blow back coming off the rifle on shell ejection. I noticed some as well while I was behind the trigger myself.

Wondering if this is normal?

It was the first time using the rifle. I had a couple failure to eject properly and the shells jammed up as the new round was load but other than that no other issues with the gun. ( I was using bulk ammo so I wasn't surprised with the jams and kind of expected them.)

But the burnt powder blow back into my face was kind of a surprise. I know it's kind of normal to have a bit, but there seemed to be a lot of it.
 
Every one I've seen does the same thing. it's a blowback operated rimfire! Some rimfire ammo is MUCH dirtier than others. I find the Remington Golden Bullets aren't bad.

I knew it was a blow back rifle, so I understood the principle. I was just mostly surprised that it was that much. I never really found it was that bad with my 10/22's. or at least I didn't pay attention to it at least.
 
Funny, I've run over 100 rounds through mine and so far not seeing this. Zero stuff in my eyes, and I've been careless and haven't used shooting glasses. Should probably do that... But no, can't say I've noticed any significant dust/gas in the face. And I've weakened the action by swapping 0.6mm diameter wire springs for the native 0.7mm diameter springs, so presumably it's opening a bit early in the firing cycle compared to stock... though maybe not. As I'm only shooting lower powered CCI SV and CCI Semi-Auto Quiet (which both cycle nicely with the weaker springs, an inch longer than the stock heavier ones) it could easily be that the bolt is flying open with similar timing to stock as it's set up now. In any case, being right-handed the ejection port is not lined up with my face, perhaps explaining the difference? Are you and your dad both left-handed?

I got 2000 rds thru mine and you will experience powder in the face. Esp when it starts to get dirty. If you wore glasses you'll see.

Okay, well I'll get there eventually. But having experienced trace amounts of blow-back powder from my TNW ASR 9mm I'm pretty sure I know what it feels like. That carbine has ejection ports on both sides, and I set mine to eject to the left side, where my left eye gets the odd little hint of dust... but nothing serious. Maybe that one isn't bad because I put in a Strike Industries flatwire spring? Maybe that relates to how putting in the right bolt springs for the ammo I'm using with the GSG-16 is similarly clean in terms of my facial experience of shooting the thing? Being a full-time woodworker I'm well familiar with what it feels like getting waste materials blasted in my face. But so far I'm just not seeing anything significant from the GSG-16, and only a slightly from the 9mm PCC. And I'm a bit fussy about keeping my stuff clean... used to get teased in the bicycle shop for having the cleanest mountain bike, as though that meant I didn't ride it enough. Fact was I liked my machine to be clean because the parts lasted longer if there was less stuff stuck in it, so I'd take off my chain frequently, soak it in solvent, whip it against cardboard then put it back on and oil it. Result? My chain and gears lasted twice as long as the stuff on those bikes left covered in mud. Same for my guns. I clean them. Often.
