My rifle shoots better than I can!

It's kind of similar to how SKS shooters claim their gun shoots 1 moa but they put their targets up at 25. So when someone actually tests them at 100 and they end up shooting the same 5" group every SKS does they say, "The gun shoots better than I do."

I always read that as, a person shooting offhand compared to a mechanical rest.... usually in regards to handguns.

All my guns can shoot better than I can. Because I'm a plinker, not a hard core pinch the best accuracy out of everything. What I consider accurate, others may think its not.

I was selling a airgun, and posted a 3/8-1/2" 20M group. He was going on how the rifle shoots poorly, and was trying to use it as bargaining chip to get it lower. I was using cheap pellets and not really trying.

This reminds me of an instance back in 1968 at Uptown Sporting Goods in Calgary. The owner of the store was a very rich fellow from Germany. He did not work at the store, it was a hobby for him. He spent time at his oil company. The manager of the store was supposed to shoot a rifle to make sure it was still shooting well ... and of course the owner would want to see the target... he had done this many times in the past and the rifle always shot well... but this particular weekend he forgot to go and shoot the rifle... so Monday morning before the owner came to the store... the manager and I were busy making a target with a good group... using sharpened fired brass and cutting holes and working on those edges... it took a few attempts before we got a reasonably looking result... and the owner was happy with the results when he came in at noon. We laughed a lot about that.

I hear this quite often. How does one figure this phenomenon out? :)

Simply: have is shot with match ammunition by an expert rifleman!
You would be extremely surprised by the accuracy of most modern rifle.
(I'm thinking about 3/4 to 1 MOA 5 shot group averages, nothing more).
Most shooters have no idea about the revolution in design and manufacturing techniques.
(I'm thinking about Tikka T3 rifle and modern high quality ammunition).

The gun is capable of shooting better in the hands of a better shooter.

Someone with good technique is capable of shooting better groups that someone with poor shooting skills.

If I flinch and have lousy technique but my friend doesn’t, they will shoot better than me, with my own gun. Ergo, “my gun shoots better than I do” when my gun is shot by someone with better shooting skill than I possess.

Like comparing a skilled musician with a beginner. “My piano plays better than I do”.

Pretty simple.

You shoot your rifle.

Then rest your rifle in a sled and shoot it again...

I'll venture the groups will indicate that your influence is detrimental to your rifles capability....

It’s not how it shoots. It’s what you can shoot with it. A rifle capable of 2 moa is plenty accurate for big game. Super accurate sporting rifles are overrated.

Simple. If the rifle shot a good 3 round group one time you say “Rifle shoots .5 moa when I do my part”

Why blame equipment when you can just claim you drank too much coffee? I’ve seen members on here blame unsatisfactory SKS groups on too much coffee. Either they should stop drinking coffee or get a new hobby.
