im curious as to how the grouse numbers are doing in your areas . in the interior here seems not that many around .and the ones i do see are very spooked .

Seeing more than last year, but that's not saying much because last year was horrible. It seemed like there wasn't any out there at all last year.
Haven't seen a lot this year, but seeing some.

Going grouse hunting next weekend, so hopefully I can find a few at least

I don't waste my time or bring a .22 or 410 with me any more.

Wife doesn't like to eat them I can take 'em or leave 'em, so I leave 'em.

I always felt bad shooting the dim-witted birds anyway.

Locally it starts up in 4 days and will be hitting my camp outside of dorset for some more challenging ones that fly. Have seen more this year up there throughout the summer than ever before, think it will be a good year here.

This is totally anecdotal but my observation is that as the wild turkey population has increased the grouse population has decreased

I've heard that the turkey eat the eggs or chicks in the grouse nets but that could just be fudd lore

My guess is it's just more the changing environment. Grouse thrive in the cold and snow, turkeys aren't quite as adept. So warming temperatures, for example, could result in a rise in turkey populations and make it easier for predators to catch grouse. Even a 1-2 degree rise in temperature can make a big difference. Different trees, due to clear cutting, fires, natural evolution, etc. could also be making a difference.

While I'm sure a hungry turkey would take an easy meal, they're not really built for eating grouse and I can't imagine it's on their diet regularly.

Locally the grouse population seems to be in the toilet this year. Way too much rain during the spring and summer for decent chick survival I think. Was out yesterday and we only saw half a dozen all day. Last year the numbers were way up and we shot a ton. This year I’m not shooting close to home. I’ll still let my son shoot them when he’s out with me, but I’ll refrain unless birds suddenly start showing up in numbers or I find an area with more.

Lotsa fool hens ( Franklin;s ) round here ..

Really, where? Have gotten lots of rabbits but 0 grouse.

Have only seen a few groups of 4 to 5 grouse in our many travels in the areas around Vernon and Lumby (King Eddy/Brewer, Aberdeen, Harris, Bonneau and out west to Westwold in R3 both north and south of Hwy 97)

Very wet spring seems to have had the first couple of clutches die off.

We have decided if we see any we will try for 1 out of any group and leave the rest (shooting them with 22LR and 17HMR)

Now that the hot weather is gone I’ve been seeing more out along the roads, I’ve been bringing home 2-3 everytime I go out. The difference this season is it’s all last years birds I’ve been seeing, nothing too big for the most part. Mix of ruffs and spruce, not quite the numbers as the last couple years but I’ve been expecting a down turn in the numbers as the last 4 have been gangbusters. Rabbit numbers have been stellar so it will make up for it if they keep going all season.
