I would assume this has been done to death... but as we all know cgn has maybe the worst search function of any site. Typing in 1897 pulls up two things and one isn't even related.

Anyway, what would a fair price be for one of these? Obviously worn bluing, perhaps some pitting. Oh, and the one I am looking at has an aftermarket plastic butt plate.

Cheers lads

Odd. When I searched, I got 240 hits. Some were sale ads. With prices.

Worn bluing, some rust, replacement butt plate.
Any mention of mechanical function, bore condition, matching numbers, barrel length, gauge, etc.?
$150 - $550?

It definitely has been done to death. The answer is always the same. Without closeup images and relevant details (such as barrel length and condition, gauge, matching serial numbers), any answer you get is a blind guess.

A beat up POS with oil soaked and cracked stocks, non matching serial numbers - $200
The average original condition (some patina finish, matching serial numbers) 30" barrel, full choke, takedown - $500
Refinished, barrel cut to 20", action slicked up, bead replaced, good condition - $500
Excellent condition, bluing 75% or better, matching serial #s, takedown, 30" clean barrel -$800+
US issued, with flaming bomb and US armoury stamps, stock cartouche, heat shield, 1917 pattern bayonet - $4000

My observations of 1897 shotguns in Gun Shows - buyers want them cheap - $500 or less.
A good quality gun with much of it's bluing and nice wood, that should bring $800 easily - just sits and sits, not selling.
