re-barreling Beretta strom question

Hi all. I just got Beretta Storm which is restricted 9mm carbine. I am planning to re-barrel it and change classification to unrestricted. Have anybody done that on Beretta? Who makes reasonably inexpensive barrel blanks? Is there smith in Vancouver area who could machine blank into what I want (Beretta's barrel has some "twists" in it)? Is there anything I should know before I start taking things apart?

I am having Epps do mine, but I sent the rifle there in Aug, they ordered the barrel, now they can't tell me when it will be done as I am a low piority with the hunting season, they won't even tell if the barrel has arrived. I will not be dealing with them again. I can understand the delay in getting the barrel, but then putting me on the back burner and not having any answers than "next month" is just poor customer service.

That is pretty good in terms of gunsmithing work. If you get it back feeding and shooting well then you will have no room for complaint.

I would'nt send a gun to a smith unless I had already gotten over the "my gun is gone and don't know when it will be back" Emotional hurtle.
 
you gentlemen made me think about me doing all the machining. I would hate giving my beloved toy to someone who will put in in queue for months.

Fall/winter is a terrible time for gun work - the smiths are all SUPER busy this time of year. Best wait till Jan/Feb to get the work done, and even then don't expect it back for 3 or 4 months (most of the time is spent waiting for the barrel to come in). So, if you want to get a head start on things, order the barrel now, and then send in your gun once it arrives

Actually I would like to see it first, it went straight from the seller (CGN type) to the gunsmith. I guess I have this strange idea that when you wait patiently in line for months, that you don't deserve to shoved to the back because some likely twit who hasn't looked at their gun for the last year suddenly remembered it broke the on the last weekend of last years hunting season.

Had the store been able to say, "your barrel is here, the gun is in smiths lineup to be completed as soon as they can get to it". I might have been more understanding, but they can't even bother to check what the status is!!

They made it clear that my business is not important, no matter how good a job they will do, I will not be able to recommand them, nor will I be willing to deal with them again.
 
I'm kind of surprised by the attitude that you are describing. I've dealt with Epps many times, for both purchases and gunsmithing services, and was never disappointed. In fact, I find that their turnaround time for 'smithing is excellent, far faster than what I expected or was accustomed to from other smiths.

I wish I could say the same, I realize that demand may exceed the supply of labour and conflicting pirorities, but how my last phone call was handled was the icing on the cake for me and I gave them a chance to say: "Give me your number and I will get back to you asap with some better information"

If they do something to restore my opinion of them I will post it.

I remember reading in the forums here not too long ago about Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC making up some barrels for the Beretta Storm. These were supposed to be long enough to re-classify your Storm to non-restricted. Maybe give them a call and see if they still have any.
 
Tfunter, thanx for suggestion, I actually have got PM from them and they do have barrels, so its a no-brainer now. Thanx everybody, I hope case is closed.
 
The glitchy part of that process would be the paperwork in my opinion.....shipping back and forth to get it reclassified. Mine was done by Epps, albeit prior to my buying the rifle. I was going to buy a second one and the reason they can't give you an accurate time is beacause they wait until they have a run of them to do, then do 10 at once, rather than 1 at a time. I also think wait time with a good Smith is a given, especially this time of year. Also, the $500 is worth it for the parts, labor, and not having to deal with the CFC and RCMP reclassification....IMHO.

I personally wouldn't buy a second hand one done in a home shop......but I'm nitpicky. ;)
 
Well I gave Epps a call today and the person told me that they got screwed around by their barrel supplier and the barrels were finally just shipped and that they had a few guns waiting to done as soon as they come in. Now as much as I don’t want to hear I have to wait, I can live with that answer and wished the previous individual had taken the time to find out some information. Bad news for a good reason is why better than the previous brush off.
