165gr TSX and the "mighty" .30/06

57.5 grains of H4350, RP brass, fed210m primer with the bullet loaded .030 off the lands. It chronographs around 2800 fps, accurate and hits very hard.
 
58.0 grs H4350, Lapua brass, F210M primer with a 168 TSX did 2830 fps and was very accurate in the 700 Titanium I had (under 3/4" usually)

168 grain TSX
57 grains IMR 4350
CCI-BR-2 Primer
R.P. Brass (neck turned, flash hole and primer pocket uniformed)
2900 fps (Ruger #1 26" barrel)
3 shot 3/4" groups @ 100 yards.

Boo, the pic is not working, just a red X. Seems that 4350 is the powder of choice. Good thing I have lots. What about 4895, is it not a little faster burning. Better for the short 22" barrel, no?
 
I am confident that 4350 will give you higher velocity with a 165 gr bullet than 4895 would in a 22" .30-06. 4895 will produce excessive pressures before you match the velocity from 4350. On the other side of the scale, 4831 runs out of case volume before it can match the velocity produced by4350, which makes 4350 a pretty well balanced powder for the '06.
 
One of the 4350's is a great choice in the 30-06 up to 165/168 grains. Above that some benefits can be gained with IMR 4831, RL 22, Vihtavuori N165, and AA3100. My pet load with the 165 TSX is 60 grains of Vihtavuori N160. 2900+ in my 24" barrel and sub MOA. Work up carefully. This is a max working load in my rifle. Regards, Eagleye.
 
2900+ is very respectable from that '06 I would say. That would have sufficient downrange impact energies and a good trajectory, for an '06. Obviously there are many calibers that have flatter trajectory and harder hitting, I know. But it is the amazing, terrific, venerable .30/06 that we are spekaing about.
 
22" barrels make the bullets bounce off deer, thats why I went with 24" on my current 30-06, its good for elk and moose now too
 
I will make sure that I stay away from any bullet-proof deer. Do the bouncing bullets come back to you or do they just bounce like a basketball?
Funny, my 20" barrel on my last .30/06 killed everything I pointed it at and let one loose. Maybe it was just luck, over and over and over.
