Why is the SKS so coveted in Canada?

I don't own one, nor do I want to. But I have shot a few.
None of the (5) I have shot were great. They were as accurate as throwing a slipper.
I get the whole 'cheap' surplus rounds, but really for what point is it if the holes aren't were you aim?
Am I just a 'bad' Canadian gun owner?

No, but you are most certainly a very lousy shot.

With all that SKS talk, i have locate some very good condition Russian SKS laminated at Epps ( 449.00 ). I have to order one, Gonna call to have one handpick. Holala.

Provided your using the SKS the way it was intended (I.e. rugged reliable rifle with minute of man accuracy to 300m, that’s easy to clean and maintain) your just fine. You basically can’t stop them once they are running. Mine has a tear in the gas tube and still functions with 100% reliability. The history is also interesting.

Personally I don’t really use mine much anymore however I don’t understand how you can’t see the value in them. I even got my anti-communist product father to love them and he was convinced everything the soviets made was garbage.

Because of its low entry cost, it often serves as an excellent base for practicing backyard gunsmithing and modifying. The end result can yield an even better rifle for the money depending on the owners preferences.

They are popular because ARs are (were) Restricted, and the AK prohibited.

If we had access to $500 AR15s and AK47s like they do down south, the SKS wouldn't be nearly as popular. Instead, In Canada you are looking at $1000+ for a mediocre gun that probably won't be any more accurate or reliable. Plus for a lot of people starting in the gun world, its accessible - I didn't have much money when I got into guns (still dont really) and it was something that I could buy a gun, buy a spam can of ammo, and go put a bunch of rounds down range without a big cost incurred.

Thus, the appeal of a $200-300 gun with cheaply available surplus ammo. Of course, ammo prices aren't what they used to be, and the availability of NR Semis is much better than it was 5 years ago (or it was until the Liberal OiC and subsequent FRT changes the Horse Cops have been doing), so you can also see why their popularity may have declined in the last few years.

I wohldnt say coveted. Its plentiful and cheap, and loads of fun

Well I can't speak about the SKS in Kanuckistan but here in the States the aura of the SKS was that in the import heyday you could buy a WHOLE CRATE! of SKSs for the price of an AR15. I only bought one. :( I should have bought more when new made Chi-com SKS were going for as little as $59 each! Ah yes! the great days of cheap Chi-com imports where a guy and his buddy could have an FFL load the old Ford pickup with a pallet of cheap ammo and a crate of SKSs at the gun show.
