today was my first outing since my carpal tunnel surgery on monday. doc said to stay in until next week but with all those leaves falling and the smell of fall i couldnt take it anymore. dusted off the old baikal single shot 12 gauge and grabbed a handful of shells...and the dog.

decided to checkout the best area for deer around here which is also the thickest bush ive seen. walked around for a couple hours and saw a ton of deer sign and knew exactly where i was so i decided to cut through some of the super thick crap on an angle towards my truck. went through the only clearing in that area so i knew i was going in the right direction.

shortly after i hear a buck snort and stomp and it sounded like he was right in front of me so i paused. seconds later i spot him and i counted 11 thick and long points and just about #### my pants because his rack was so big. he took off and what a smell he left. ive smelt many deer but this old guy was nasty and my dog seemed hypnotized by his stink. heard him stop about 40-50 yards away so he wasnt too spooked. he didnt look my way so im hoping he only saw my dog who was about 10-15 yards to my right. the wind was perfect so he didnt wind me. i took a few more steps to get past some cedars and thats definitely his bedding area and im guessing the rub and scrape line nearby was his.

not long after that a grouse takes off and my first reaction was swing...too bad i forgot about my bad hand. :(

so i kept heading in the same direction when i realize i should have hit the trail by now. ended up calling my buddy and had to use clouds, crows and wind to get back to the road. my buddy isnt a hunter so he ended up guiding me to the road on the opposite side of the bush lol.

2nd time ive been lost in there. at least the first time it was dark and i was dragging a doe around. compass' dont work in there and the gps gives screwy readings which is why theres only a few who go on this public land and even fewer who leave the trail.

we are going out saturday to try and get him to play

sure im a little embarrassed but i thought id share my interesting day:) i also never realized how hard it is to hunt with one hand.

lets hear some stories boys. i know im not the only one that has got lost before.

i always say i'm never lost. i always know where iam. i'm right here. problem is i don't always know where right here is. i'm quite good at it.

There's the tree that was split by lightning, here's the little brook, across the meadow to the little stone pile around these bushes...... around the bushes..... around the bushes...... back to the stone pile...... where's the $#*@& stone pile? I don't remember seeing all these bear tracks before......

I've wandered in the wrong direction a few times. Usually when it's starting to get pretty dark out and your trying to find your truck. Course nobody is out driving the back roads late at night so can't just listen to find your way back to the road lol Bought a GPS and the second time I really had to use it I realized I had dropped it somewhere back in the swamp I had passed through. So being a fool I turned around to go back to look for it and of course turned the wrong way. Wandered about a kilometer before I realized I wasn't back tracking. Took me another hour to find my way back sigh....

Best of luck on that Deer man! Hope to see a new thread up this weekend!

i really hope so too. im not sure how well its going to work trying to shoot my crossbow one handed. i might just have to stay on the ground and call while my dad is in a stand nearby;)

saw alot of fresh scrapes and rubs so a little aggresive calling and rattling might be the ticket.

anyone know why he stunk so bad? it smelt like normal buck stink but mixed in with something rotten and bad smelling human pee:confused:

so you got lost in southern ontario?? good thing you made it out, another 1500km and you might have been out of cell phone range... haha

Could be a festering wound, or some type of intestinal disease.

been lost and got the compass out.

I was in East Lake Anslie so I set my compass for east. Welllllll, I should have set it for West. So after a morning of walking in a very straight line I hit a road found a phone and the rest is history.

Sucks being lost.

IM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO GET LOST YEAH!!! sorry for the caps. I got lost on family property after I went off the path. Our woods have grown up so much and our path is horrible. I found fence and followed it to high point called my parents. "Mom, Im in the woods"/ Her"Your lost arent you", Me"No, I was playing hide and go seek with the path and its winning". We talked for a bit noticed a famers field followed his electric fence, worried about getting shot at. Finally got out and I ended up about 1 hour walking distance from our cottage. LOL

Fun though, Mom was in a panic. I was pissed off because there is a mean bear in our woods and all I was armed with was my multi-tool.

Been lost ONCE. What a hopeless feeling I swore never again. GPS, spare batteries, compass w/roamers, and a topo map of the area.

At least you weren't lost...with the buck of a lifetime at your feet. You may of found your way home, but could you have successfully retraced your steps to recover that monster?

You got lost is soutwestern ontario? Are you still on some meds? At least tell me it was cloudy that day,:D

it was actually very cloudy and windy so i used clear spots in the sky as reference points;)

i made a little sketch of where i walked and it seems impossible to get where i was:redface::confused: this is the thicket bush ive seen in sw ontario and its actually like being far north its so overgrown. definitely nothing like the "normal" bush lots around here.

Pretty easy to get turned around in a featureless swamp, or a flat section of brush, or thick trees. There's nothing to give you a bearing.
I try to use my shadow as an indicator when possible, but when the clouds are thick, sometimes I just drag out the compass, or the GPS. If you are not carrying either, well, you're not too bright are you?
There are many other ways to determine direction of course.
