D4198 in .223 Rem

Hey all,

I was recently given 3.5 lbs of D4198, and I'd like to use it in .223- how does it compare to H4198 and IMR4198? I'll be using 50-55 grain bullets and IVI brass, and I'm more interested in accuracy than velocity.

Has anyone tried it in .204? I have better powders for that one, but you never know- it might just be the ticket for one hole groups...

Use IMR4198 load data minus 10% and work up your load (google d4198)

I use the D4064 and D4895, very decent powders, made by IMR in Canada. They are a touch faster or slower then their IMR counterparts, not enough that a handloader would notice any difference, but they are not close enough to sell as the real stuff. Work up a load as mentioned above.

It works well especially with lighter bullets. Most semis will cycle with it too, only issue I ever had was with full length gas tubes on ARs.

I find it very close to IMR 4198. Depending on your case capacity and powder lot, you can probably get over 22gr under a 50gr bullet before you start popping primers. I was running 22.3gr with no problems in a 5.56 chamber AR15 using supposedly too soft CCI 400 primers. I used the same load in a Savage 223 chamber but it does have a pretty long throat compared to SAAMI minimum spec. Hodgdon says 21.9gr of IMR 4198 is max in a 223.

400s are supposedly good up until 50,000 psi. I have used them in this same situation myself without issues. I reached my target velocity (62fmj@2800fps from a 16"bbl) with no pressure signs at all.

Thanks for the advice. My offspring is turning 12 soon, so he'll be able to shoot at the DND range with us- I can see him burning through a lot of this stuff in his rifle.

21.8grs D4198 and Hornady 55gr SP is my go-to 223 plinker load

22.0gr of D4198, CCI #450 primer and a 55gr FMJ in mixed brass chronos at 3080fps out of an 18.5" barrel for me. No adverse pressure signs.
