Keeping the Midland factory busy for awhile!!!

New weapons day sights for the Armed Forces
After a series of thorough tests and discussions with users' representatives from the Army Command and the Danish Artillery Regiment, it has been decided that the Elcan Specter Dual Role (DR) is the right replacement for the Elcan C79.
June 16, 2020 - Kl. 10.00

[Originally published by the Ministry of Defense's Materiel and Procurement Agency]

The new weapons day sights have a variable magnification, 1-4x magnification, which is acquired for rifle and light machine guns and 1.5-6x magnification, which is acquired for heavy machine guns.

The variable magnification is a great advantage for the shooter, who can quickly and easily switch between magnifications by affecting a small handle on the side of the sight. This flexibility, along with a crosshair, which can be illuminated in two different ways, ensures a dynamic shift while engaging goals. This is true in different situations and at different distances, where bullet-drop indicators and caution marks in the reticle can be used in both daylight and darkness.

Set to 1x magnification and with the powerful lighting set only on the center spot, SpecterDR can in most situations effectively replace a red dot sight - all within a split second, and without the cumbersome removal and installation.

The new day sights are procured in three variants, adapted to the Armed Forces' requirements for ballistics, color and accessories:
1-4x to 5.56mm rifle
1-4x to 7.62mm light machine gun
1.5-6x to 12.7mm heavy machine gun

The Army initially has Priority Standing Response Force (SRS). All M60 LMG and all TMG in the Army get the new sights. We expect delivery in the first and second quarters of 2021. However, the old ELCANs will be maintained immediately before anything else is decided.

Great glass but yes, the price tag is ridiculous these days. Even $2000 was a stretch. They are pretty heavy with crappy eye relief... yes I do own one. If you aren't the one paying no worries I guess.

Raytheon's DR price is always in the USD, which hasn't really changed much over the years - our price gone to #### when CDN lost 30% of the value.

How have you reached the conclusion that the eye relief sucks? It's fantastic, unlike ACOGs you don't have to jam your eye against it which with the wide field of view is incredible for shooting from different positions and wearing a helmet.

There is a very short and specific spot I have to place my hard to see the reticle without disturbance, that's across a few ARs and the Tavor I have mine on now.

The issue you speak of is for the TA31 series of ACOG only. All the others have excellent eye relief, weigh much less and actually hold zero unlike Elcan products.

I've literally never heard of any loss of zero issues and I used it for 5 years whilst in the infantry, no one ever mentioned it losing zero easily and no one ever encountered it as a problem. Maybe the older ones used by canadian forces have problems (I have no idea) but the ones we used were absolutely bomb proof.

Where have you pulled the opinion that they lose their zero easily?

My Elcan bounces around a LOT. On the quad, in the truck, strapped to me while I hike around the nasty parts of my property, removed for cleaning etc. I haven't had to adjust it since I installed and sighted in almost two years ago... I would have to call BS on loss of zero as well.

My limited experience with them had a zero loss. Some shooting acquaintances have also reported a loss of zero, and a good half dozen or so infantry folks report the same. Granted the infantry guys are from quite a few years ago, could be an older generation issue. Fixed or not, they're still stupid heavy, garbage eye relief and over priced.

Older C79s it was common, and even with later mods it was encountered.
If you have a later mod and use it as a range toy, it is very likely ok, however I just know that when I was in the EO Techs were constantly busy with them.

I've only heard of the DRs having zero shift thirdhand with flipping from 1 to 4 power and back again, not experienced it myself because I can't bring myself to spending that much coin on such a limited scope, whether it shifts or not.

I heard it was an issue with prism in the optic that has been rectified on newer generation dr. The external adjusters are also prone to getting debris locked. Especially in places with fine sand.

The acog remains the preffered option for me. Simple, lightweight. Decent reticle and no batteries required. And if anything tougher than an elcan.

I never used the Canadian variant only the British OSx4 variant. Absolutely bombproof
