Hey all,
Just wondering how good would an m1 carbine would do on deer as a bush rifle. Close range obviously.

Only you know what hunting conditions you experience, and the style of hunting you use. I would think a .30 M-1 (110 @ 1900) would be alright for black tails in the Queen Charlotte's, but of little to no use at all for big bodied whitetails on the western prairies. Personally, I would pass on the little .30 if game weight exceeded 100 pounds. A fusillade does not equate to one good round. A 7.62X39 is a powerhouse by comparison.

Hell I don't see whynot within 50-100 yards with proper ammunition.

Heres the stats on Magtech hunting ammunition for the M1.

.30 Carbine SP 110 grainer will be going at about 1,990 feet per second at the muzzel with about 967 ft/lbs of kinetic energy. So Yeah while its not an extreme amount, I'd say within 50-100 on small/midsized game.

some provinces require >1000ft/lbs of energy for deer.

I knew a guy on the coast who would regularily wound black tails with a 30 carbine. In some one else's hands it might have been sufficient but it sure was'nt in this guys.

When a .303 sporter or SKS costs less then a months cable bill there is really no excuse for using a 30 carbine.

It would be ####e. You're better off with the SKS. It's an anaemic, half-assed rifle round designed for killing people, or at least incapacitating them. Not an appropriate deer rifle.

The cartridge is too short, it's not legal. Too bad they a a sweet gun to carry.

That settles that.... Better not to use it anyway. Like other fellas are saying lots of much cheaper beater guns out there that will kill much more efficiently. I still think it is capable of taking down a black tail O.K. for example in the right hands.

M1 would make a cool coyote gun ect. though.
