Hello shotgun Gunnutz,

I noticed that Aimpoint makes a rib mounted S1 with a 6 MOA dot. I was wondering what advantages this has over something like a receiver mounted 6.5 MOA Trijicon RMR (like on many tactical shotgun configurations)

Is it the similarity to a fibre rod at the front? Better FOV like a scout scope?

Thanks

If we are talking about a pump shotgun or a semi auto ... and where the barrel can be removed easily ... then a sighting system that is attached to the barrel is more accurate .... in the sense that it holds it's point of impact.

There is always a little bit of wiggle or play between the barrel and the receiver (pump and semi auto with removable barrel) ... and it is enough to shift point of impact after disassembly and reassembly.

I have an 870 Police with ghost ring sights and 18" barrel .... so the rear sight is attached to the receiver ... and I observed up to 4 inches of shift of the point of impact at 50 meters ... and after cleaning ... meaning disassembly and reassembly.

So, if you are intending to shoot slugs and you need accuracy, then a barrel mounted sighting system will provide you the accuracy and consistency that you would need to shoot/hunt beyond 50 meters ....

If you are intending to only shoot buckshot and birdshot ... then you might not even notice a difference ....

I never thought about that! I don't intend to shoot slugs at all, so i guess there wont be a noticeable difference.
