Tahltan president explains why his nation is paying members to hunt bears and wolves

good read, thanx for posting.

Glad to see the province being sidelined in favor of robust predator management.
I wish this would take place in region 5 and other areas of the province as well because the province is managing fish and wildlife for a net zero result.

Although I applaud their predator management actions, they do carry a heavy reverse racism policy towards all other hunters. They have several times decreed that those not of their tribe are not welcome in a vast area they define as "traditional", going so far as to implement illegal roadblocks.

All of the animals are equal...some are more equal than others though

Much as I’m pissed at the taltans right now for blockading me out of my moose draw area, I do agree with hi that the province does a piss poor job of wildlife management

I couldn't care less about their opinions. If they want to keep people of land they have every right to be on. Then I can gladly ignore them like I do other racist groups.

And this is news?
Anyone who thought this stupidity in the logic they are using wouldnt appear is really blind .
I'm just surprised it took as long as it did to come out into the open.
Well as open as the paper it is reported in that is.
Noggin, no offense, but I figured it would have happened day one of the Closure to non natives to hunt GB this would have been going on.
T'wont be a matter of time before they are complaining there are no more Grizzly Bear and No idea why they all disappeared.
Now we need funding to study why this important animal to our culture has gone.
Just my nickles worth of opinion.

you guys crack me up.
maybe you didn't read the entire article
I read in the last few paragraphs that resident hunters and guide outfitters were specifically named as beneficiaries to this management plan.

but hate on. it's the cgn thing to do.

So we all get paid X amount of dollars for shooting a predator?

Really, not sure how, when they do road blocks to not allow resident hunters to access the areas where this would help. Nor are they offering to pay resident hunters and guides and outfitters to shoot predators, only there own people. And in the past they have specifically stated that they want no access to residents to hunt on "their lands" so the last paragraph is just lips service.

He did mention resident hunters in the last couple paragraphs. But the taltans have been blockading access points for resident hunters for years. They finally got the restrictions on residents that they wanted (he mentioned that things had gone better for them more recently), then this year they used covid as the excuse to block resident hunter access to an area the size of Portugal (his estimate).
They can’t pay residents to shoot grizzlies cause we’re not allowed. The natives are still allowed to hunt them, the ban doesn’t apply to them.
B.C. is doing a piss poor job of managing its wildlife, I don’t agree with the taltan taking matters into their own hands, but somebody has to do something.

The article made some good points and it is nice a group with the political clout and willingness to side step the grizzly hunt ban is doing something. I did a sheep hunt this year in Tahltan territory and could have killed three big grizzlies. Too bad I am not Tahltan, I could have made the hunt a profitable business. As far as the road blocks go, I think it was meant as a tactic to pressure the BC Provincial Government, more than an attack on non Tahltan hunters. Unfortunately the NDP and Green Party care less about resident hunters than just about any demographic, so they aren't likely to get the message. I think it was misguided and would have been more wise to get the resident hunters on their side, rather than blockade and alienate them. Every time I drove past a blocked road with my wife I had a bit of a rant. Each blocked road got me a little angry. Our politicians have created a situation where two groups who want the same thing are at each others throats, rather than cooperating. Tahltans and resident hunters want effective predator management and sustainable ungulate populations. If only we could cooperate and bring the fight to the urban politicians who are clueless when it comes to these topics.

As the article stated, "...it’s very inappropriate, if you don’t have any firsthand knowledge of what it’s like to live in that vastly different environment, to be telling the people that have been stewards of those lands in that environment for thousands of years what they should do and what they shouldn’t do."

I couldn't agree more. This applies to resident hunters as well. We need to get together with First Nations groups and push for responsible wildlife management. Resident hunters and First Nations people have to live together and with wildlife. We have the same goals and are more similar than different.
