WK180C Owners Thread

New to the forum, still working out the text editor and image insertion but here's an imgur link - https://imgur.com/a/OoAzqIf

I installed mine last week after receiving in the mail, overall it seems like an improvement but I haven't put it any rounds downrange since I installed it. The 3-D printed material is a lot grippier than the metal handle, your hand will have a hard time slipping while charging the rifle with this handle from SBI. It does seem to fit a little more flush to the receiver than the original as well. The bolt design also makes it super easy to torque it down during dis/reassembly. Will update if I have any issues but otherwise it seems really solid.

Let us know how it goes.

Purchased new.
Some issues at start
Warranty replacement threaded handle and carrier
Round 100 round area
Flashhider came loose-replaced with TNA no issue since.
Bolt lug broke round same time KD replaced had it in 3 days or so approx 800 rounds on new one no issue approx 900 on gun total.
Handguarď screws were insanely tight all came out though but 1 stripped had to pound in a torx head and screw it out worked though
Extraction issues 250 rounds or so in replaced extractor spring with dpms spring works pretty good now occasional issue with polymer/plastic mags
Cpd mags seem the best in mine still wanna change extractor spring to a bcm heard there better.
Loves hornady match grade ammo thats been the most accurate but I dont like to pay the price so pmc and american eagle work well in it and are accurate as well.
Ordered a strike eagle 1x6 still like the sparc ar but the magnifier im not a big fan of at longer distances the magnified dot covers too much and I wanna yote hunt a bit with it so gonna try the 1x6 strike eagle out on it.
Triggers #### I upgraded the trigger with dpms trigger spring kit still not great wish I got a reduced power spring set either way isnt gonna get ya to what a nice aftermarket trigger will.
Might have to start using the blue loctite on the handle and need ar buffer tube wrench as its came loose tapped tight with punch for now.

WK180C
coupled cpd mags
Tna flashhider
Dpms trigger spring kit
Dpms extractor spring-gonna order a bcm
Mdt pistol grip
Brass deflector
Vortex vmx3t magnifier
Vortex sparc ar
Feyachi cheap 45 iron sights do the job
Tna 15" handguard
Amazon vertical magpul knock off grip
Midwest industries bipod adapter

Even with the issues I had I would do it again alot of bad name came early on the release of this firearm IMO dont expect a 3000$ gun or ar 15 and you wont be dissappointed would I want it in hand over others in a shtf not really but if i were in one I would prefer it over lots of others too lol (And what are the better options now that are NR)???
The guns more accurate then I thought it would be I have taken it out to 200 yards with a 4x12 on it and it shot good and it likes certain ammo hornady pmc and american eagle being best i have tried match grade 75grain works awesome in mine I wanna get into handloading for it at some point

Still wanna get a odin works extended mag release and better trigger in it.

Anyone installed the spectre handle? Got a pic of it installed?

Nice set of mods... and a decent problem list to boot :D

If you find a link to the BCM extractor spring, can you post it as I will likely order one as well.

check your firing pin hole in the bolt. Maybe a bit of debris has got wedged in it. Also look at the end of the firing pin to check if a small part of it has fallen off.

Thanks, it didn't look damaged. I'm thinking somehow the bolt cam pin wasn't rotating properly allowing the bolt face to properly seat on the chamber. Not sure. Need to try it again this weekend and see what happens.

Kodiak has not replied to any of my emails. That's probably not a good sign. They were very responsive a couple of months back.

Make sure to take pictures before and after.

Try calling, there's so many reasons why they might be slow to respond on emails that it's not worth reading into it unless it gets silly.

I was following up on my issue with the recall and the broken piston rod and decided to call Owen and he answered right away. He also apologized for the delays in getting to my emails and that he was close. I had a nice long chat with him and we sorted my issues outright on the phone. He's sending me a new piston rod and also a new bolt as soon as he receives the old one and after verification of it needs replacing.

It could just be delays in catching up like Bratwurst said. If your issue is really urgent, try calling.

Without meaning to be rude, I don't think you know what you're talking about when you say that you expect a small company to:

- Design a new rifle to work with low/medium number production methods
- Establish the manufacturing equipment, training, licenses, logistics, supplier relationships etc etc
- Tick all the required health & safety boxes and get permission from the Gov't to go ahead
- Test and refine the rifle to an acceptable level
- Market the rifle
- Offer a one year no questions asked warranty
- Pay wages, pension contributions and taxes
- Compete with products made by multi-national government supported companies like H&K
- Do all the above for $1000 - $1200 with say a 5 - 20% profit margin at best

It's not the best rifle in the world, it's not made by a large company with large resources, it's made out of a small factory in Ontario.

It's also $1200, you want big company quality? Go drop $2400 on an X95 made by a large govt supported company, not good enough? Ok the G36 is waiting for you. All to often on this forum I see "Chicom" mentioned so there's that, you can grab a Type 97 G3 if you like for circa $1100, then later complain about Canadian manufacturing disappearing.

I absolutely do think the rifle could be better, and I absolutely would be happy if they upped the quality and took us to $1500. It's a rifle, treat it right and it'll last for a long long time.

Hyperbole aside, this is an AR-180b - a tried and true design. All they had to do is replicate it and box it.
Wasn't much for them to market and near as I can tell, Wolverine bank-rolled it.

The AR180b being a derivative of the AR-180 was designed to be made from stamped steel, in very large numbers. The WK180C from Aluminium in low numbers a whole different ball game.

We don't know who bank rolled what, but I'm pretty sure that Wolverine will not have just offered to incur all the debt from Kodiak setting up, both sides will have invested.

Perhaps Marketing made up a small part of it, fair enough, that doesn't address the rest of the cost items I mentioned.

regarding 1st gen owners having their aluminum uppers gouged out by the steel magnetic charging handle, i just had an idea to install a sacrificial plastic spacer between the receiver and the bolt carrier. ideally this would be a PTFE washer, but i don't have any on hand and the local hardware stores don't carry things like this of the size that would work. so for now i 3d printed this spacer out of PETG. let's see how it goes.

for anyone else that wants to try this, the washer needs to be 6.4mm ID X 11mm OD X 2mm thick.
if you can find a PTFE washer that's smaller in thickness and ID that's fine, just stack them up to make 2mm and it can be up to 2.3mm thick.
if the ID is too small, just drill out the ID with a 1/4" drill bit.
the OD needs to be not larger than 11mm because it needs to fit through the hole where the charging handle comes out.

Modern machining of aluminium is cheaper than stamping and spot welding steel. So again, they had a simple design spec that they had to follow and not ##### up. Pretty straight forward.

Maybe already covered, but any comments/reviews on the Spectre Ballistics replacement charging handle?

I have one installed and will be trying it out on the gun on Saturday. Although I can already say that it looks nicer and it doesn't seem to be as uncomfortable as the factory handle when the weapon is slung (as it protrudes into my upper gut. It looks like it's basically a 6m hex head bolt with a 3d printed plastic knob glued on with heat shrink around the base where it goes through the receiver. It seems fine, but after the price and shipping, it's $30 so I'm not sure it's worth it. But if it doesn't suffer from breaking like some of the factory ones, then I guess it's worth it.

I have mailed my bolt carrier in. Waiting for KD to get back to me either with a new screw in bolt handle or the original returned with an inspection stamp (as per Owen). I am not sure what to expect if I do get a threaded bolt carrier, if they do replace it. Will have to try it out when I get it back.

VC, the handle looks nice on the gun. If I get BCG with a threaded handle, I'll order one of those.

So I took mine to the range today after my epic fail last weekend. I ran through 60 rounds just to make sure everything was functioning properly... and it was. Not sure what the drama was all about last weekend with it refusing to fire, but whatever it was appears to have been solved by my tear-down and reassembly.

The new charging handle is nice. I like the looks of it if nothing else, although it doesn't dig into my rib cage as much as the factory knob on a sling which is an added bonus.

It might be worth just looking at your trigger mechanism? that sure was odd.

Yeah, I did upgrade my trigger previously, but that seems to be working perfectly. I did scrutinize that in particular. I wonder if somehow when putting it together before that range day I didn’t get the cam pin properly oriented or something so the bolt face wasn’t making proper contact with the chamber. I dunno. At any rate, it seems to be fixed.

So I sent in my BCG last Friday and I just received notification from Canada Post that "something" was shipped from Kodiak, I am not sure what to expect - new threaded BCG or my old BCG returned with an inspection stamp. I know for sure I am getting a new piston rod and a new spring. The turnaround time and customer service are excellent.

Parcel is expected to arrive EOD tomorrow. I will post an update when I get the package in my hands.

Cool... looking forward to hearing what you get.

Received a new threaded BCG today along with the replacement rod and spring. Excellent service from KD.
