Rifle Scope Mounts - Preferences?

M a rail and rings kind of guy myself. I only have one rifle with bases, and on that I’m using Leupold. Typically I use Burris rings, and whatever steel rail I can get.
 
For a hunting rig, I'd run DNZ all the way. Been using them for years and have never heard of them failing or shifting when installed properly. Any other type of use and I'd lean to a picatinny arrangement .

I am pretty sure this is wrong.

Talley sells steel rings that require no bases for several rifles. These include the Steyr Scout rifle, a bunch of different 22 rifles, and I think the CZ 550 rifles. I think they made a ring system without bases for the Sako A7 too. But I cannot find that on line for some reason right now. It could be I am mistaken about the A7 and am thinking about something else.
 
Yeah because those are all rifles that have receivers with dovetails built in. Jim is right for anything with a round top receiver.

Wish S&K made lower rings. I’m also a big fan of leupold dual dovetails, the old ones before they put the gaudy logo on them. As well as Burris DD signatures with the inserts.
 
I like the Talley Light Weights but use them on my lighter recoiling rifles. For the heavy hitters I have been using Warne Tactical bases and Quick Detach Rings with good resuls from both set ups.
I was also looking at Near!! They have a good reputation.
 
I just had a new set of Warne QD give some troubles on a CZ with heavy recoil. Must not have had it tight enough as the finish chipped away and huge wear into the recoil lug on the ring with very few shots fired . Warne is sending me a new set. The Near Alphamount is awesome.
 
On a Sako I use Opti-Loks, everything else a Talley 0.020" rail and Burris Signature Zee Rings, literally shot 1000's and 1000's with this set up with no issues whatsoever, makes scope changes easy as well.
 
It all depends what kind of rig your're building. A nice lightweight 280 AI for use in the mountains or a heavier barreled 280AI for pronghorn on the flat lands? If you're going up or far, I'd go with the Talley Lightweights. The only downside to them is that they are limited in the ability to change the position of the scope forward and backward. I've used them before without any issues. If you're building a flatlander then you could go with something heavier to give you more adjustability in the mounting department. I'll admit that I am considering puttign my 3.5-10x Mark 4 on my 25-06 A-Bolt that I had built a number of years ago as an open country rifle. But I'll also admit that there is little practical reason for me to abandon the 3-9 Burris in Weaver rings that are currently on there just to go with a picatinny rail and the 3.5-10x Leupold.
 
On a hunting rifle I prefer Leupold Dual Dovetail rings and two piece bases ... and a 3.5-10x40mm Leupold. Very solid and very reliable and compact.

Hard to beat that set-up on a hunting rifle. I like that on a typical install I can get the rear ring 1/2” farther forward, and that can save me a couple hundred in stock remodelling. Bit of a pain to take off and on, but it’s a Leupold. Why would you need to take it off? :)
 
I slum it with Weaver aluminum bases and either their QD rings (can be a bear to get the scope on square since all the screws are on one side) or Burris Signature Zees

They've all done fine so far but my hunting rifles don't lead the most demanding lives. Probably not what I'd want on a rifle going to Africa.
